Local musician StarBoss Big Eye has taken shots at fellow artistes who release “irrelevant songs”.

In a cryptic social media post, the “Nkuziniremu” singer said that he sings to fill up arenas, not like some of his fellow artistes whom he said need to sort themselves.

He posted on social media: “I don’t do music for just people to say omwana yakubye ekigoma. No! I sing music for people to say omwana yakubye show nejjula. Thats why I don’t release irrelevant songs. My music is financial where by someone wakes up in the morning, finishes his work, takes shower, smears him or her self with vaseline, puts on his or her favourite cloth, puts on his socks and shoes, gets his money ready, boards any means of transport to come and enter Big Eye’s show.”

He added, “Some of my fellow artistes must sort them selves here.”

Although he did not mention any names, it is believed the message was directed at his old nemesis, Eddy Kenzo, who released song after song through out 2016.

Meanwhile, StarBoss is working on new videos that will be unveiled this March.

Diamond Platnumz poses for a photo with Tanzania Revenue Authority officials

Bongo star and Wasafi Records chief executive Diamond Platnumz was summoned by the Tanzania Revenue Authority to table a report on his source of wealth and a statement on his tax returns last week.

The award-winning singer has been on the government’s radar lately. Early February, the Bongo star was summoned to appear before the country’s investigative agency in Dar es Salaam after he was listed as a suspected drug trafficker working in a network in Tanzania.

He was also recently summoned by police who charged him with driving without wearing a safety belt.

On Wednesday last week, the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) summoned him to table a report on his source of wealth and a statement on his tax returns.

He honoured the summons and made available the documents which were scrutinised by the officers. TRA later handed the celebrity a clean bill of health for complying with the law.

Wema Sepetu

Tanzanian socialite Wema Sepetu has ditched the ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) to join Chadema. She told reporters at her Sinza home here that she had done so voluntarily in search for democracy.

A number of Chadema members and supporters also attended the event. She described the ordeal she went through as a suspect in a campaign launched by Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Paul Makonda in the past two weeks as a humiliation by the ruling party.

“During my detention I was treated badly and my friends were threatened and barred from visiting me only because of allegations,” she lamented. She said she did a lot for CCM during the 2015 General Election campaigns, only to be humiliated.

“I have joined Chadema not because I am mad. I want to fight for democracy and dignity of Tanzanians.” Wema, who is also an artiste, urged her fans to rally behind her and fight for freedom. “I believe that majority of my fans will join Chadema.”

Her mother Mariam Sepetu, who also decamped from CCM to join Chadema, said she was hurt the way her daughter was treated. “That is enough reason for me to leave CCM,” she said.

“ My husband [ambassador Isaac Sepetu] and I were both staunch CCM members. It never crossed my mind that one day I would leave CCM but now I have done so because I also want to fight for democracy as a Chadema member,” she added.

Mrs Sepetu was the CCM Nzasa branch chair.

Banky W

Popular Nigerian R&B singer Banky W is lucky to be alive after fire gutted his home on Tuesday.

A neighbour to the artiste revealed that the fire was caused by a faulty air conditioner which was believed to have started around 6:00am.

The Lekki resident said, “The fire started around 6am and all of us came out to assist Banky in putting out the fire. However, Fire service officials arrived around 7.30. So many items were destroyed including Banky’s awards.”

Meanwhile the singer who recently palyed a leading role in the blockbuster movie ‘Wedding Party’, took to his Instagram page and gave scary details of how his dog and himself nearly got consumed in his house fire.

Read his post in full below;

“So there’s good news and bad news. The good news is… I’m thanking God that I’m alive to give the bad news as a testimony.

“Bad news is…

“I was laying awake in bed at about 6am , and I just started smelling smoke. Stood up to shut off my tv and ac and realized it was coming from outside my door. Opened it to see the whole stairway was filled with huge gusts of black smoke/soot, and a fire was burning stuff downstairs. The smoke was so much I couldn’t get down past it to see the source of the flames. Rushed back into my room and climbed down from the 2nd floor balcony with my dog… and then got help from the amazing workers and neighbours who helped me put out the flames.

“Turns out the ac in the living room had caught fire.. I know a lot of ppl have been trying to call and I appreciate it. Maybe the fire burnt some of the network in the house because I can’t receive calls LOL, but instead of calling to say sorry pls just maybe say a prayer and thank God with me.

“Thank God I was awake to smell the smoke. Thank God we caught it early enough and the damage wasn’t so bad.. it basically burnt some of the stuff that was around it. So awards, portraits, and some small electronics. But thank God, Duke and I are alive and well. We only had to form James Bond and climb down from the top floor balcony LOL. Thank God for my neighbours and the amazing workers in and around the compound for helping us escape via the balcony, helping put out the fire, and helping with the aftermath/cleaning.

“Thank God for life. And I’m not even upset.. I’m just grateful for life and health and for the grace and mercy of God on my life. I figure I’m about to have the best year ever so the devil tried to throw a tantrum. But not today Satan. Not today, not ever. Now sit back and watch me be great. By God’s grace. Amen.

“God bless you all.”

2face Idibia

Nigerian Music icon 2Face Idibia has donated N3.5 million (about Us$ 11, 000) to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) to support humanitarian interventions.

The commission disclosed this in a statement by Mr Hanson Tamfu, External Relations Officer, UNHCR, Nigeria, on Monday in Abuja.

He said the donation from the 2face Foundation was to support the commission in providing life-saving support to families forcibly displaced in Nigeria and across the continent.

Tamfu said that 2Face expressed joy and commitment to helping the victims of insurgency who have been forced to flee their homes as a result of the unrest in the North-East.

He said the musician also pledged his continuous support to UNHCR in its humanitarian assistance to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and other persons.

The officer quoted Tuface as saying, “I am proud to support the UN Refugee Agency because of its proven track record of being at the fore front of displacement emergencies.

“I want to help people who have been forced to flee their homes because of different issues.

“I care about them and this donation is one of such efforts because we plan to have a major charity concert in June to raise money whilst offering my music and talents to the world for donations towards this noble cause.

“I am confident in UNHCR because it knows how to make a difference in the lives of millions of women, children and men who have lost everything but hope,“ Tuface said.

Tamfu said that UNHCR is almost entirely supported by donations from governments, who contribute 89 per cent of its annual funding needs. He disclosed that UNHCR and its partners require USD2.45 billion to provide critical life-saving assistance to the displaced families in Africa.

He said that funds were required to meet the enormous needs of displaced persons with the number of the world’s displacement at more than 63.9 million. The officer explained that this was also due to an unprecedented level of over 19.4million of those living in Sub-Saharan Africa, the needs are enormous.

Mr Valentin Tapsoba, UNHCR’s Director of the Africa Bureau, appreciated Tuface for his generosity and contribution to UNHCR’s cause.

Tapsoba said that having someone of Tuface’s calibre who recognises the needs of the people who have been forced to flee their homes was extremely encouraging.

He said that it was a clear step in the direction of an Africa that takes ownership of its own challenges and strives to address them. Tapsoba said that as a musician, who has been singing for over two decades, his campaign would cut across all generations and make an impact.

Don Jazzy

Mavin Records boss, Don Jazzy has launched a free Wi-Fi service called Flobyt, to give back to the society. Don Jazzy is partnering with founder of Tsaboin, technology company, Dele Odufuye, to make the dream come true.

At the unveiling of the initiative which was held at Renaissance Hotel, in Lagos, the Marvin Records boss said, investing in Flobyt has been a life-long dream of his. “I have always wanted to play big in the technology space and I looked for people who were sound and had a beautiful track record in the technology space. This is my first business investment in the technology space that is public while I remain a silent partner in others.

“I am really interested in driving Flobyts reach beyond Lagos. Our Wi-Fi is the fastest in town and those who stream our music and content as entertainers are from the US and the UK. We believe that if we improve our services the numbers can improve.

“I believe so much in this. This is one of the few other investments we are going to be sharing with you. I have been on social media for a long time. I know how expensive data is. I give free airtime, now it’s time to give free WiFi,” he said.

Don Jazzy, however, revealed that at specified locations, between 10-30 people can be connected to Flobyt at the same time while in locations with higher traffic, Flobyt Max can provide internet service to 10-80 concurrent users.

moonlight movie

In his fourth year of handling envelopes for the winners of the Academy Awards, PricewaterhouseCoopers partner Brian Cullinan picked a bad time for a miscue — pulling the envelope for what was supposed to be the best picture winner from the wrong pile.

As a result, presenter Warren Beatty carried the wrong envelope Sunday night, meaning that his on-stage partner, Faye Dunaway, announced “La La Land” was the winner of the night’s top prize. “Moonlight” was actually the best picture winner.

Tim Ryan, the accounting firm’s U.S. chairman and senior partner, offered an explanation Monday of the unprecedented miscue, along with his profuse apologies to the Motion Picture Academy and to the filmmakers behind the two movies.

“We clearly made a mistake and once the mistake was made we corrected it and owned up to it,” said Ryan, attributing the foul-up to “human error.”

Ryan said he had spoken to Cullinan about the episode at length. “He feels very, very terrible and horrible. He is very upset about this mistake. And as a firm, given that he is a partner of our firm, it is also my mistake and our mistake and we all feel very bad.”

Cullinan was positioned stage left during the evening. His colleague, Martha Ruiz, stood in the wings, stage right, Ryan said. Each had a pile of envelopes for presenters entering from their side of the stage and then a pile of “backup” envelopes for the presenters entering from the other side of the stage at the Dolby Theatre.

Cullinan pulled the lead actress envelope that was in the “backup” pile and handed it to Beatty. “There’s a stack for the backups and the ones that are not the backups and he took from the wrong stack,” Ryan explained.

Beatty hesitated twice after opening the envelope, apparently confused when he saw both the name of lead actress winner Emma Stone and “La La Land.” Not understanding Beatty’s hesitation, Dunaway said: “You’re impossible. C’mon.” Beatty then showed her the card and Dunaway announced: “La La Land.”

Asked if Beatty and Dunaway could have recognized the error, Ryan said: “No, look, it’s our job, not theirs.”

The PwC chairman said that both Cullinan and Ruiz, who had memorized all of the winners, as per company procedure, realized instantly that an error had been made. “Martha … immediately recognized that was not who won,” Ryan said. “She opened up her backup envelope to confirm her memory.” Cullinan immediately told members of the production team of the error, Ryan said.

Procedure for such a mistake calls for the PwC employees to then take the stage, along with members of the production staff, to correct the error, Ryan said. He did not know why it took more than two minutes for the correction to be made, with “La La Land” producer Jordan Horowitz delivering the news to the world that “Moonlight” was the real best picture winner.

“This is the first time in over 80 years that there has ever been a problem and again we are very disappointed in ourselves,” Ryan said. “I have reached out to the Academy and shared with them that we take full responsibility that Brian had made the mistake and the firm takes responsibility for that.”

Ryan said he was not focused now on whether the flub would hurt the firm’s relationship with the Academy or its prospects of returning for another year of counting the ballots. “I expect us to get something like this right and our focus right now is just on making sure the academy and the rest of the folks know that and the rest will play out,” Ryan said. “We are very proud of being associated with the Academy Awards. It’s good for our brand. It’s good for our people. So while I am concerned I hope we will be judged on how quickly we reacted and owned up to the issue.”
