Mitchellex Carnival

By Our Reporter

Every year, residents of Mitchell Hall at Makerere University host the annual Mitchellex Carnival and this year was no exception as the carnival was held on Friday evening at the Mitchell Hall Grounds.

The annual event brings together residents of Mitchell and Complex Halls to celebrate solidarity between the two, culture and foster friendships. The event which also attracts the general MAK student community is held every second semester of the year.

This year’s event was even bigger, with a unique fresh experience, attributed to a much needed cash boost from Smirnoff Ice Green Apple, a new product by Uganda Breweries. Drinks were in plenty and the entertainment line-up was even better.

The party kicked off early with DJ Ali Breezy on the decks at 7pm. By 9pm it was full house with students struggling to find where to position themselves as they danced to put off the university stress that had clothed them in recent weeks.

As is the norm, ‘elders’ were present to pass on the halls’ unique culture and practices to the new and existing residents. These included performances by the Rat Guard Brigade, informal custodians of Mitchell Hall, as well as songs with lewd lyrics.

The party went on into the wee hours of the night with an explosive showcase on the decks by DJ Ciza that kept the students on their feet.

According to Rhona Namanya, Innovations Manager at Uganda Breweries, the experience was specially created to unlock exciting opportunities for the revelers as well as give them a fresh bite on life. The brand will continue to unlock new experiences as it is rolled out countrywide.

Smirnoff Ice Green Apple joins the family of existing ready to drink vodkas; Smirnoff Black Ice and Smirnoff Red Ice.

Joel Sebunjo

Ugandan folk musician Joel Sebunjo has released his first video of 2019. Dubbed “Rise Up Africa”, Sebunjo calls on fellow Africans to break the colonialist mentality and be proud of their heritage.

Starring the Waka Stars band, the video opens with a mock of the famous Malcolm X 1965 speech  at the Ford auditorium in Detroit in which he said colonial powers had projected the image of Africa negatively which led many to subconsciously hate it.

“They projected the image of Africa negatively. They projected Africa always in a negative light: jungles, savages, cannibals, nothing civilized. Why then naturally it was so negative [that] it was negative to you and me, and you and I began to hate it. We didn’t want anybody telling us anything about Africa, much less calling us Africans.,” an excerpt from the speech reads.

While Africa has been projected in bad light, he says there is plenty to be proud of like its natural resources, flora and fauna. It is this that makes it beautiful.

Since Monday, rumors spread that Liquid Silk Naalya had been closed. A number of false reasons were peddled to explain the closure. But none was ever conclusive. A reason this website reached out to our sources at the Bugolobi based offices of the Liquid Silk franchise.

According to the workers there, Liquid Silk was indeed sold off. “Liquid Silk, together with their neighbors, Mogas Petrol station were sold off to a popular food chain franchise. The money exchanged is good, and was undeniably had to refuse for the owners of both premises.” Explained a source.

According to sources, the space of Liquid Silk Naalya was singled out as strategic for both a restaurant, but as well as a petrol station. “The spaces of both Liquid Silk Naalya and Mogas petrol station have both been procured, and in a short time, development will start,” explained a source.

It is said that both parties walked away smiling to the bank.

Why doesn’t Diamond Platnumz forgive his sick and broke father?

Diamond Platnumz

By Bash Mutumba

The story of deadbeat dads doesn’t change much, regardless of the part of the world you’re in. Tanzanian Bongo Flava star Diamond Platnumz, 29, was abandoned by his father a few months after primary school, and he has seemingly refused to forgive him for it, roughly two decades later.

Reportedly due to abject poverty, Mzee Abdul Juma Isaac split from his family, leaving young Diamond and his mother Sandra to fend for themselves. Diamond went on to drop out of high school, and start hawking second-hand clothes to try and support his family, then that he was the man of the house. With the unwavering support of his mother, Naseeb ventured into music, and his first single, “Kamwambie”, propelled him to fame.

Diamond would go on to attain international acclaim after “Number One Remix” featuring Davido, and his works Rick Ross, Morgan Heritage, Omarion, P Square and Ne-Yo. His hard work and determination enabled him to build Wasafi Empire, which includes a Record Label with successful artists, a Media House, a video production company and other businesses. All the while, he has not embraced his father, and it is his mom that enjoys the fruits of his hardwork.

Asked about when he last met his son, a frail Mzee Abdul revealed, “He last came here during the time he was dating Wema Sepetu. I can’t go to his place because I am scared – he is a rich man – what if he pulls out a weapon on me? I am really sick. My legs hurt, and I clean people’s shoes to get something to eat, but till today, my son has refused to forgive me.”

Many commentators, wondering why he does a lot of charity for people he doesn’t know but chooses to ignore his own father, have urged Diamond to forget about the past and reconcile with his dad, but for whatever reason, the requests seem to be falling on deaf ears.

The delegation from India and local tour guides pose for a photo during Gorilla tracking in Bwindi

By Our Reporter

Having successfully completed an eight-day tour of Uganda, a delegation from India comprising Bollywood stars and members of Travel Agents of India (TAFI) has today, Monday March 4, 2019 flown out, full of praise for the country’s rich and numerous attractions.

The group, led by Bharat Dabholkar, a distinguished film director, actor, writer and advertising guru, arrived in the country on Wednesday February 28, 2019 and almost immediately flew out to Kidepo National Park.

The team started off with a game drive and sight-seeing, giving them just a glimpse of the diverse wildlife in Uganda before proceeding to meet the Karimojong in their indigenous homesteads, the Manyatta. The team also went gorilla tracking at Bwindi, visited Queen Elizabeth National Park and also enjoyed a boat ride on the Kazinga Channel, among other activities.
As they concluded their Ugandan visit, the team met President Yoweri Museveni yesterday at State House Nakasero where they discussed several issues.

The President urged them to encourage more tourists from India to come and experience the beauty of Uganda. He also said that linkages between India and Uganda have the potential to boost trade and investment.

Dabholkar, who has directed and starred in over 17 Bollywood films promised the President that they would promote Uganda as a tourist destination for Indians and also as a location for filmng Bollywood movies where Ugandans will participate.

He also stated that they will bring big film tourists to Uganda saying that film tourism will be a big deal.

Asked how his Uganda visit was, Dabholkar couldn’t hide his excitement, saying he would gladly jump onto another opportunity to visit Uganda.
“We came to Uganda to also experience the numerous stories we had been told about this place (Uganda) and to be honest, this is an extremely beautiful country. There’s a lot for one to take in here and I think I would need another trip to experience more of this,” he said.

Dabholkar was particularly excited about the Gorilla tracking experience and the Manyatta cultural attributes. He noted, “Niche tourism with special package like the Gorilla tracking is very easy to sell and for our team this is a take home package for all.”

Other members of the delegation included; Shobanadri Yarlagadda, lead producer of Baahubali, a famous trilogy in Bollywood cinema, accompanied by his spouse Lakshmi Yarlagadda and Prasad Devinemi who helped co-producer the same film.

Others were Bharat Shah, Chairman of TAFI, Pradeep Lulla, Vice President of TAFI, Aditi Bhende, National General Secretary of TAFI and Ramji Natarajan, Chairman of Travel Masters India Corporation.

Also in the team was Veena Patel Sandeed, owner of Veena Travel, a Mumbai-based Indian tour company specializing in budget travel packages, Karad Anand, Head of Relationships and Supplier Management of Cox and Kings, a famous global travel agency with an Indian base.

Sumit Chaturvedi, an Executive Producer at India’s World Is One News (WION) global channel who was part of the delegation disclosed that most of the footage attained from the visit will be featured in a televised program offering, which will be free advertising for Uganda tourism industry.

Grace Akello, the Uganda High Commissioner to India, while welcoming the delegation to Uganda, stated that the visit aimed at unmasking Uganda’s tourism potential, opening up the space for newer opportunities and for the film stars onboard to spot out potential sites for possible film shoots. “This visit paves way for the possibility of local film makers working with this world-class film giant in southern Asia, to promote Uganda,” Akello said.

Uganda has in recent years become a haven for the production of internationally acclaimed movies. Hollywood blockbusters such as Queen of Katwe, The last King of Scotland, Victory at Entebbe, 7 Days in Entebbe, Mississipi Masala starring Denzel Washington, are some of the movies to have featured Uganda.

Adding Bollywood onto that portfolio would be a huge steal given the global appeal this burgeoning Asian movie industry has gained.

The team’s visit was as a result of cooperation between Uganda’s Mission in New Delhi with government tourism agencies; Uganda Tourism Board and Uganda Wild Life Authority; as well as the private sector.

Mad Rat and Chiko in the Jazz laftaz comedy show

Comedy duo Mad Rat and Chiko doing their thing.

By Our Reporter

After their successful show early last year, the dynamic comedy duo of Madrat & Chiko –real names Dickson Lubega and Frank Mubiru– have been on a roll, with their comedy acts and shows growing by the number.

And by the time next week starts, the profile of the ever-improving duo will have risen a notch higher, for the comic pair is set to headline performances at the prestigious Singleton challenge slated to take place at Entebbe Golf Club this Saturday.

The duo will be the lead entertainers for golfers and guests at the exclusive 19th Hole Experience at the Entebbe Club –and you can be sure that after the golfers are done with Round two of the challenge on the greens, they will have to laugh their stomachs out.

Madrat and Chiko will not be the only comedians in the house; they will be performing alongside famed President Museveni imitator Teacher Mpamiire, as well as the event’s host Patrick Salvado Idringi.

When asked about how they are able to communicate at corporate events, given they came through the ranks as a primarily downtown comedy outfit, the duo were candid in their inevitably funny way: “There is a saying that ‘desperate situations call for desperate measures.’ We didn’t complete school and truth be told, our English is not the best, but we will speak it when we have to. At most corporate events, we are pushed to the wall, but at the end of the day we come out of it and smile all the way to the bank. People should expect the best”.

The grand prize for the winning pair of this year’s Singleton Challenge is a fully-paid golfing trip to watch the OMEGA Dubai Desert Classic, a series which has featured some of golf’s best players, including Tiger Woods and Henrik Stenson.

Sheebah in Enjala video

By Our Reporter

Last week, Ugandan music sensation Queen Sheebah, had a flashback Friday when she stepped into a downtown dance studio for teens, joined by Tanzanian heartthrob Harmonize before they recorded their Coke Studio Africa duet.

Best known for multiple hits such as Weekend, Wankona, Farmer and Binkolera as well as her role as Shakira alongside Lupita Nyong’o in Queen Of Katwe, Sheebah started her career at 15 as a dancer in a group called Stingers before she left the group for Obsessions Music Group in 2006.

“I was just like you. I also had a dance crew, we had a place like this. Walking in here I got that same feeling I had when I got a spot in my first dance school. People may say ‘Oh you are just a dancer and blah blah blah blah, but no you are not just a dancer, your dreams are valid!” she said during her emotional pep talk.

As part of the episode, Harmonize, clad in a pink suit, performs Mummy Yo – one of sheebah’s hit songs while Sheebah performs his ‘Atarudi’ track in Luganda.

For their original composition, the two work with Nigerian producer Gospel on the Beatz to create an amazing track titled ‘Follow Me’.
