Harriet Ntabazi (C), the state minister of trade, industry and cooperatives officially launches “Omuyaga mu Bwakabaka” movie.
By Our Reporter
MTN’s Kibanda Xpress has welcomed a new blockbuster to its collection. This follows the premier of ‘Omuyaga mu bwakabaka’ by Pearlwood, the association of local film producers.
Launched in April, Kibanda Xpress is a Video on Demand channel housed on the YOTv channels app and created in partnership with MTN Uganda with the sole aim of boosting the local film industry.
Speaking at the premier of the movie at National Theater in Kampala, the film producer, Segawa JohnBosco revealed that Omuyaga mu Bwakabaka depicts the theme of love as the movie displays a crown prince’s resolution to marry a simpleton woman in defiance of a cultural betrothal to another.
The movie, he explained seeks to educate the youth about culture whilst also exporting Uganda and her traditions all over the world.
“The movie will educate people across the world about Uganda’s customs as the story is based on the 1st prince in the Buganda culture, (Kiweewa), who according to norms was never raised within the father’s palace. He is faced with a catastrophic return to the kingdom as he rejects the would-be cultural wife after falling in love with his childhood friend. They must defy every custom to survive,” he said.
Discussing the state of Uganda’s local film industry, Segawa highlighted the challenge of marketing and piracy which rids the players of the fruits of their labour and in turn affects further investment into the sector.
“As a film industry, we really struggled because we invested but never earned because of piracy. Selling one Compact disc to a person meant that you sold it to the entire village. But when MTN and YOTv introduced Kibanda Xpress, they came to our rescue because atleast now we earn from the movies aired on the platform,” he said.
Kibanda Xpress allows customers using the Yotv channels application to watch local films at only UGX1,000.
MTN Uganda’s Manager Digital Services, Onyait Odeke said MTN subsidized the service to enable Ugandans to access the films affordably to support the local film industry.
He reassured the film industry of MTN’s commitment to support the arts and local film industry which employs many youth in the country.
“This is a huge milestone because while we were always served with international content, we didn’t have opportunities to showcase our own but now, the world can see what we have to offer as Uganda,” he noted.
Odeke was reiterated by the guest of honor, honorable Harriet Ntabazi, the state minister of trade, industry and cooperatives who lauded MTN for its continuous support of the youth in Uganda especially highlighting the Kibanda Xpress initiative to boost local content.
While congratulating the actors upon accomplishing the movie, the state minister urged the actors to embrace quality production and incorporate locally made costumes in a bid to promote the Ugandan culture and the local film industry.
“I am urging the local film industry to prioritize quality production of the movies in order to have competitive advantage over the regional and international productions,” she said.
Hon Ntabazi said that government is committed to creating 2 million more jobs by 2023 in the film industry which she says currently employs about 50,000 people.
In her conclusion, state minister Ntabazi highlighted the potential of the local film industry saying if well promoted, it can contribute significantly to the country’s coffers.

Chapterz, a new drama series has premiered on Pearl Magic Prime.
According to the show producer Rhonnie Nkalubo Abraham, Chapterz is an adaptation of “Ekiryaatabaala”, a local play by Bakayimbira Dramactors. The drama series seeks to unravel family secrets of society’s upper echelon.
“The story of Chapterz goes back into Ugandan theatre. There is a play by the Bakyimbira Dramactors called ‘Ekiryatabaala’ from around 2001. I enjoyed the play as a young man.” Rhonnie Nkalubo Abraham told media on Wednesday. “The play portrayed how a family was perfect as seen on the outside but a mess on the inside.”
“When I approached Charles James Ssenkubuge, the author of the play to ask for permission to produce it, he was concerned that we would not do it justice. So we agreed to do a pilot first. We shot two episodes, and when he watched them, he gave us the go ahead to do an adaptation.” Nkalubo added.
“We have tried to address many of the issues that were highlighted in the play; what goes on in the life of the wealthy; what happens inside their gates. In this story, a wealthy man provides every thing for his children, but they are never contented and this gets them in trouble as they go out to seek their own fulfillment.” He concluded.
The TV drama series premiered on Wednesday, August 11th on Pearl Magic Prime and will be airing every Wednesday and Thursday at 7.30pm.
“We are trying to adapt our content to make sure that when a Ugandan watches it, they feel like they are relating to it. This is what we are doing with Chapterz and a lot of content you are going to see on Pearl Magic. We want to show Uganda as authentically as we possibly can.” Commented Joan Semanda Kizza, the PR and Communications Manager at MultiChoice Uganda.
Chapterz drama series stars big names including Laura Kahunde, Aisha Kyomuhangi, Ssali Damascus, and Henry Mpinga Ssempijja among others.

Last week, Biggie revealed to HoH, Maria that there would be no evictions on Sunday. However, she was told to pretend like there would be and that she had been given the authority to select the housemates that will be up for possible eviction.
Maria showed her impressive skills as an actress as she convinced the housemate that she would be the one doing the nominations alone. All the housemates were apprehensive and immediately put on their best behaviour to not end up on Maria’s list.
After all was said and done, Maria selected Jaypaul, Pere, Yousef, JMK, Emmanuel and Angel as the six people who least impressed her during the week. During the live show, Ebuka shocked Maria herself by asking her which two of the selected housemates she would like to see go home. Although she hesitated a lot, she eventually picked Yousef and JMK. That was when Ebuka finally revealed it was a prank all along. Much to the relief of Yousef and JMK, who get to spend another week in the house.
During the ‘no-eviction’ Sunday show, Ebuka talked through some of the events of the past week. Boma revealed that if Maria hadn’t nudged him towards picking Jackie B as the person to share the Head of House lounge with, he would have picked Angel instead. He also mentioned that Queen was a possible option.
Saskay let everyone know again that she had no expectations from anyone in the house relationship-wise, and they shouldn’t have from her. This was in reply to Ebuka’s question about her seeming relationship with Cross and Jaypaul.
The show ended with the housemates receiving stern warnings from Ebuka about how they speak about past shows, reunion shows and events outside the house.

In March this year, MTN Uganda launched an exciting Tik Tok bundle offer that gives Tik Tok users unlimited access to the App for 24 hours at only Shs.2,000. This followed the success of the “Tik Tok Free” that was launched last year, giving customers free 5minutes for Tik Tok upon a purchase of 15mbs daily data bundle.
As a growing entertainment channel that is fun yet data intensive, MTN’s Tik Tok data bundle is a move that has been welcomed by many users of the application.
Tik Tok is the new way to consume bite sized fun videos for the youth. The social media platform is used to make a variety of short-form videos across genres like dance, comedy, education, Finance, crypto currency, fashion, cookery, fitness and health among a plethora of topics. The videos that have a duration from 15 to 60 seconds and the nature of its vast and unpredictable content is what makes them more appealing.
MTN has gone into partnership with Tik Tok to promote the service among its customers. The Tik Tok bundles are available to all MTN Prepaid and Postpaid customers with compatible handsets. The Tik Tok bundle can be conveniently purchased via the MyMTN App, MOMO App, Pulse App and Mobile Money.
Harold Mubiru, an ardent Tik Toker says that the heavy data requirements for one to use the app are forbidding yet the app is loaded with lots of entertaining and educative content.
“I personally used to love spending more time on Tik Tok but I couldn’t because it is very heavy on data. I would end up going a few days without posting content due to lack of data,” Mubiru said, adding that he used to spend anywhere between Shs.5,000 and 15,000 on data per day to keep his Tik Tok account active.
However, the introduction of the dedicated Tik Tok Data bundle from MTN changed his narrative.
“Now I can stay on the App as long as I like to create and monitor my posts while also looking out for the trends that I can hop on to without worrying about data,” says Mubiru, “The best part is that for just 2k, I can post heavy videos and even hold a Tik Tok Live session which used to cost me 10,000 back then before the MTN Tik Tok Bundle offer.”
Mubiru explains that the affordable MTN Tik Tok bundles have helped him to be consistent with content creation, something that is helping him grow his following further. Now with over 60K followers and counting.
Commenting about the offer, Onyait Odeke, the MTN Uganda Manager Digital Services GTM said that, “We realized that Tik Tok is a growing entertainment platform that was fun but data intensive. That is why we decided to create a bundle that is time based as opposed to volume based to enable our customers spend more time creating and viewing content on this platform.”
Odeke further noted that since majority of the Tik Tok users are young, data would be an issue thus the need for a more affordable bundle that gives them unlimited access for 24 hours at only Shs.2000.
Opportunities:
Although many people simply use Tik Tok for entertainment purposes, Mubiru who also joined the App for fun has overtime started earning from his content.
Since 2019 when he joined the platform, Mubiru has garnered a following of over 60K followers, giving his content a big reach, which has in turn attracted business towards him. His clientele is mostly artistes who pay him for his choreography services based on the dance videos that he posts on Tik Tok.
“So, you can say Tik Tok has given me a platform to showcase my dancing abilities and I am earning from that as I wait for university to reopen so I can go back and carry on with my studies,” Mubiru says.
Yvonne Namakula known as @Thisoctoberfairy on Tik Tok is also an ardent Tik Toker who joined the platform less than a year ago and has grown her following to nearly 200K in a matter of months. She is currently one of sought after Tik Tok influencers, which has not only left her Tik Tok famous but has also ensured she smiles her way to the bank.
Like Mubiru, she is also a student who only discovered Tik Tok during the thick of the lockdown last year. So far, she has turned what would have been redundant days to productive days that have also put money in her pocket during the pandemic.
“This implies that by making the bundle affordable, we are not only providing infotainment for our content viewing customers, but we are also supporting our content creating customers to earn seamlessly from their efforts,” Odeke said.
Whether you are a content creator like Namakula and Mubiru or a content viewer who loves to binge watch Tik Tok videos in your free time, the MTN Tik Tok bundle will give you 24 hours’ access to the app for only Shs.2000.
