Hip Hop Explosive concert at YMCA, Wandegeya

By Our Reporter

The Rhyme Like A Girl hip hop collective, a cultural envoy from the United States, found a highly expectant crowd at YMCA, Wandegeya on Saturday night at the Hip Hop Explosive free concert. There was a real Ugandan hip hop vibe in the air, with attendees clad in casual attire, jeans, t-shirts and sneakers. The speakers were blazing with music, some sat on bleachers and others danced 360 degrees around the centred stage.

The concert was a celebration of hip hop and the climax of the Arts Envoy 2018 programme, a collaboration between the US Mission in Uganda and Breakdance Project Uganda to skill Ugandan artists with the artistic, marketing and business skills needed to advance their careers in the local arts and entertainment industry. The envoy included workshops in Jinja, Masaka, Kampala and Wakiso, as well as a concert in Jinja and an Art Forum on ‘Copyright and How To Earn From Your Art.’ The emphasis was on hip hop and women’s empowerment, involving mentorship sessions sharing knowledge about how to succeed in the entertainment business.

The Rhyme Like A Girl collective headlined the final explosive concert, with the trio Toni Blackman, Atlas and Sincerity representing from New York. The line-up also included plenty of Ugandan hip hop artists like: The Mith, Lady Slyke & DJ Nesta, Sylvester & Abramz, St.Nellysade, Lyrical G, Pryce Teeba, Sandra Nankoma, T-Bro and Qrea-us. Featuring The Spotlite Crew & DJ Issa, Freestyle Dance Cipher,Boys & B-Girls, Beat Boxers and Poppers.

The concert commenced just before sun down with live graffiti painting, and soon rappers like Qrea-us took to the stage, along with breakdancers and beatboxers. Abamz Tekya, founder of Breakdance Project Uganda, introduced their youngest beatboxer from BPU, a b-girl known as Akiiki. Decked out in a green BPU shirt, red baggy ‘Gucci’ trousers and sneakers; her confidence and talent stirred up the audience with amusement and awe.

Then what is a Hip Hop Explosive concert in Kampala without some lugaflow? Pryce Teeba and St.Nelly-sade brought the Luganda rhymes. Sandra Nankoma AKA Sandy Soul later stepped on stage and the crowd roared for her unique songs, soul with a splash of rap. She sang with feeling leaving the audience hanging onto each and every word. Sandra’s level of talent was met by The Spotlite Crew, who danced with a mix of storytelling and b-boy style. The Bakiga too had a lot to say that night, represented by the multi-lingual T-Bro.

When Uganda’s well-known rapper The Mith stepped on stage, everyone started shouting out their requests. People could not get enough; they jumped from their seats, requesting for more and more. Abramz and Sylvester then both performed and the crowd went mad with excitement, dancing around the stage. The concert came to a climax when the Rhyme Like A Girl collective took the stage, even rapping for some time together with Ugandan female MC Lady Slyke and local beat boxers. The crowd left their seats for good at that point, as if the night had just begun.

Eddy Kenzo honoured at the Young Achievers Awards

By Our Reporter

Musician Eddy Kenzo has been recognized as a Young Achiever. This was during the annual Young Achievers Awards ceremony held at the Kampala Serena Hotel on Saturday. The “Sitya Loss” star saw off competition from fellow musician Rema Namakula, H2C Dance Group, Ivan Mulumba (author) and Felix Byaruhanga (founder The Tribe UG).

Eddy Kenzo embodies the proverbial rags to riches story having defied great odds to become successful. According to the singer, he was forced to fend for himself at a tender age after his mother passed away when he was just 5-years-old. With no education to speak of, he was initiated into the life of a street kid and made ends meet doing menial jobs.

Kenzo lived on the street for 13 years, before he finally recorded his first song in 2008 titled “Yanimba” along side Mikie Wine. He finally had his breakthrough with his single, “Stamina” in 2010. His life would change forever after his 2014 single, “Sitya Loss”, turned into a global sensation with renowned Hollywood stars sharing the song. He has since performed on several big stages and sold out shows across the globe.

Eddy Kenzo could not hide his excitement as he accepted his award, noting that despite a hard life as child, he is now an achiever who is living a fulfilling life.

Meanwhile, the award ceremony was graced by Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto who delivered a keynote address in which he lauded the organisers for this initiative that “represents an idea that Africa should celebrate and reward its achievers and validate their dreams without waiting for others to do so”. He also received the Lifetime Achievement award at the ceremony.

Other special awards that were given out include the Young Achievers Star Hall Fame award which was awarded to Betty Bigombe, a former Ugandan minister now working with the World Bank. The Young Achievers Hero award was awarded to Patricia Okwiny Joyce, who is supporting people with disabilities and Phyllis Kyomuhendo was announced as the Overall Young Achiever of the year.

The ongoing political situation in Uganda is no secret, especially the forced detention of singer-cum-politician Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine. The past week has seen many Ugandans and the world over rally behind the artiste, extending their support to bid for his immediate release.

And what better way to do this than through music? Ugandan singer Pallaso has today released a 4-minute track addressing the issue. In the song, he calls on government to listen to the plea of Ugandans and free Bobi Wine, for the sake of peace.

The track, produced by Eddy Dee, was released via on social media, with the lyrics stressing the need for amicable means to be devised to tackle the issue, before it’s too late.

“I wrote this song because I feel the one thing we need in this nation, which is peace, is getting destabilized. Plus, I am trying to pass on a message, basing on how I feel and what I hear amongst the population. Bobi Wine is not only a husband, father and son of this nation, he is a symbol of hope for many young people. We have so much hope in him, and I believe that what he stands for isn’t to go against the government, but rather to bring the much needed change in this country,” Pallaso says.

The latest news is that he has unveiled a new charity organisation dubbed “Amber Heart Foundation” and also donated 60 million shillings towards treatment of children with heart problems.

The donation comes as a fulfillment of the “Golden Heart” concert pledge  in which he promised to use proceeds from the show to cater for the the expenses of 5 children to travel to India to receive heart surgery.

Addressing media on Monday, the Batidemu singer re-affirmed his commitment to facilitating more children with complicated heart problems to receive treatment in India as he revealed that the new charity organisation is aimed at consolidating his charity initiatives.

Through this organisation, I will use my influence to attract more resources to help the underprivileged.” He stated.

The Royal Ascot Goat Races were held on Saturday at Speke Resort Munyonyo lakeside. The Tusker Malt-powered  event which was returning from a 5-year hiatus impressed with its high-end fashion and picnic vibe. Minus a drizzle in the early afternoon, the event went on smoothly as revelers indulged in the day’s festivities.

The goat racing which was the day’s main attraction had the crowd excited as they surrounded the track to witness the winning goats. Not known for athleticism, the goats had to be prodded to the finish line with minders pushing a cart behind them. Bebe Cool’s famous goat that he named after his musical nemesis A-Pass didn’t put up a good show, coming last in the day’s first race.

The hospitality tents were also something to look out for with the goat owners’ tent being one of the most sought after, not with the free-flowing liquor and food, thanks to Speke Group of Hotels.

Off the race tracks, there were prizes awarded throughout the event amongst them the big win for best dressed couple being a return air ticket to Dubai.

The event ended on a high thanks to performances from Bebe Cool and Fik Fameica that left the crowds wildly excited, before an elaborate fireworks display capped it all.

Here are some photos from the event.
