Last Friday was no ordinary one at UBL as the brewery and its spirits plant, International distillers Uganda celebrated 6 and 11 years of “No Lost Time Accident” respectively.

“Lost-time accidents” are defined as work related accidents or injuries that require employees to take time off from work. These kinds of accidents are common place in plants where heavy machinery is operated such as a brewery.

To celebrate this milestone, UBL held a gala for their staff at the brewery. The event was headlined by the smallest rapper in Uganda – Fefe Busi, who caused excitement among UBL staff with his live performance.

The “Who is Who” hit maker brought the house down with his extremely thrilling freestyle session. His fresh lyrics were derived from what was happening at the event and the staff were excited by the way he was playing around with words. The event also featured hilarious live performances from IDU staff.

To crown off the gala, some of UBL’s safety champions received awards and gifts from the brewery.

Cameroon Gitawo

South Africa based tycoon Charles Mbibo famously known as Cameroon Gitawo has distanced himself from claims that he was involved in a racket that saw another Ugandan conned of $45,000 (sh200m) in a botched car supply deal.

The news comes after the arrest of a one Geoffrey Nwase on Friday for allegedly obtaining money from Bashir Semakula by false pretense. Geoffrey claimed to work closely with Cameroon Gitawo, who is presently in South Africa, and after he got paid, he switched off his known contacts. This prompted Bashir Semakula to lodge a case at Central Police Station (CPS) vide KMP GEF 237/2018.

Gitawo has vehemently denied involvement in the said racket. He says he doesn’t know about the said deal and the persons involved. He believes it is a deliberate plot to tarnish his name and has threatened to sue Bashir Semakula for tarnishing his name.

“If he is demanding the said money from me, why is he doing it after one year and a half? Why is he doing it after he heard I was coming to Uganda?” He quizzed, adding that, “I have sold tons of cars to Ugandans with no complaints. He just wants to spoil my name. I have never meet or communicated with him.”

How Police frustrated Bobi Wine’s Kyarenga concert

Bobi Wine

It is no longer news that Bobi Wine’s much-anticipated ‘Kyarenga’ concert that was slated for this Saturday, October 20 at Namboole stadium will not take place as earlier planned. This after the stadium’s management revealed that they had already been pre-booked to host another event on the same day as the concert date.

Bobi Wine has since come out to speak out on these developments. In a statement released online, the “Time Bomb” singer said that the police was to blame for the concert not happening, claiming they frustrated his efforts to get clearance as per the legal requirements as they tossed him from office to office.

Read the statement below.

As you are all aware, there have been several hiccups in our preparations. These problems have been caused by the inconsistency and lack of transparency on the part of Uganda Police Force. For the past three weeks, the event organizers have been tossed up and about by the police. Indeed, over three weeks ago, we approached the police and informed them about our intentions to hold the concert as required by law.

We agreed and made payments to the Namboole Stadium management, and made a booking for the 13th of October. That was our initial date of choice for the show. After making a deposit on venue fees, the Managing Director of the stadium called requesting us to change the date because there was going to be a match between Uganda Cranes and Lesotho on the date we had booked. Even when we had already recorded adverts mentioning the 13th, we decided that a game involving our national team was very important and it was fit and proper for us to let them access the stadium. We then agreed with Namboole Management and rescheduled our concert for the 20th of October. We started advertising.

Once again our team went to the Police headquarters in Naguru with a written request for the Police to clear the show and provide security on that day. On arrival, the police officers in charge of recieving and filing letters refused to stamp on it to indicate that it had been recieved. Even when we insisted that we needed this for our records, they persisted. Days went by and when we followed up, the team was advised to meet the Director of Research in the Police about the same!

Our team went ahead with other copies of the letter to the Director of Research (Mr. Ochom) who sent us to the Inspector General of Police. The team went to the IGP’s office and he sent them to his assistant who then sent them to afande Asuman Mugyenyi.

At this point, these guys started speaking a different language.
The team was asked to get written clearance from Namboole stadium first and when they approached the Namboole MD for the letter, he in turn asked them for police clearance!

It is a day later that we saw a letter on social media addressed to us from Namboole saying that the 20th of October was also booked for a wedding. We asked for a copy of the letter if it was legitimate and it was not given to us.

The team also visited the Kampala Metropolitan Police office and the KMP head, Moses Kafeero referred them to his assistant. His assistant told them to go to the Chieftaincy of Military intelligence (CMI) if they wanted any information concerning police clearance of the Kyarenga Concert!

My team went back to the Police headquarters on Friday last week and they were told to go back today at 10am on condition that I appear with them in person. When they told me, I decided to cut short my trip to Kenya to attend this meeting today. To my dismay, when my team reached the Police headquarters this morning, they were told that the IGP was out of town. I resorted to making phone calls to him all day today but the person who picked my calls kept telling me that the IGP was in a meeting at the Police headquarters board room since 8:00am.

We have done everything required of us by law but it is apparent that the people in authority are doing everything possible to frustrate the concert.

With silent disco is now common place on Kampala’s nightlife scene, the dos no longer rouse much excitement. With this in mind, organisers of the silent disco at Aer Lounge in Kololo on Friday evening decided to switch up the experience. The event came with a new twist, adding 3D cinema to the experience.

Touted as an affair to remember, the Smirnoff 3D Silent Cinema and Disco event was indeed a memorable experience. Besides dancing away the night away, revelers now also had an option to just lay back and instead enjoy a movie screening on the projector.

The Smirnoff 3D Silent Cinema and Disco at Aer Lounge

Revelers who flocked the venue in big numbers were welcomed with a pair of headsets, 3D glasses and a free bottle of Smirnoff Ice to kickoff the evening. Movie lovers found themselves seated on mats and large cushions which were laid down  closer to the screen, while the rest of the crowd took up space on the tables.

However, as the night proceeded most revelers found themselves abandoning the movies and switching to music. The movie channel would eventually even get switched off as the party gained full momentum. At this point the crowd was all on their feet dancing and screaming themselves hoarse as they reveled in the music. At some point the crowd could even be seen dancing in unison, especially when the deejay played a popular song.

The party was hosted in the bar’s open gardens affording revelers a much needed cool breeze as they partied away till wee hours of the morning. Switching between the blue, green, and blue channels, revelers enjoyed music mixes from a line up of 10 deejays who included, Naselow, DJ LL, DJ Benon, DJ Marvin, and The Drop Out among others.
