Hot Pink Catwalk Charity Show

By Our Reporter

The Hot Pink Catwalk Charity Show, a one of a kind fashion show that shines the spotlight on persons with disabilities, attracted Uganda’s top fashion designers as it returned for its 3rd edition. The annual event which is organised by Malengo Foundation, a local NGO propagating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, was held at Terrace Bar, Victoria Mall in Entebbe on Saturday evening.

Hosted by media personality Malaika Nnyanzi alongside albinal Martin Lubwama, some of the collections that highlighted the evening included a showcase from Kongo-liro whose “Waste for Value” collection featured outfits made out of recycled household items; Jerome’s collection which was inspired by light and consisted of outfits ornamented with lamps; and  Cissy Nagawa’s collection which was themed “Standing for disability rights” among others.

The event ended towards 10pm with an All-Star showcase featuring 10 top fashion designers that included K. Rafeal, Eguana, Paple Rayn, Martha Jabo, Muyomba, NFKA Clothing, Beryl Couture, Kais Divo collection, Kas Wear, and Kori House of Couture & Design.

Walking the runway was an inclusive cast of models who included able-bodied persons doing the catwalk alongside blind persons, amputees and albinos.

Meanwhile, revelers were also entertained by a dance outfit of persons with disabilities who performed a dance routine that incorporated breakdance and salsa moves, eliciting a standing ovation from the crowd.

According to Michelle Omamteker, the Executive Director Malengo Foundation, this year’s Hot Pink Catwalk Charity Show was aimed at drawing attention to the social rights of person with disabilities.

“Social inclusion is just as important to the overall inclusive development of persons with disabilities as is any other form of inclusion such as political or education inclusion,” she stated. “Social inclusive development is not a luxury, but a basic human right that every human being, regardless of disability, should enjoy.”

Maurice Kirya entertains fans during the Kirya Live 2018 edition held at the Kampala Serena hotel.

By Our Reporter

2nd November 2018 won’t be like any other day in the calendar. In the books of history, it will be the day when Kirya Live 2018 sold out, just like the other past Kirya Live editions.

The clock was ticking towards 9pm, and on the floor people were literally fighting for space to have a glimpse of their star – Maurice Kirya, the King of Mwooyo. Upcoming acts like Shifah Musisi, Afrie, JC Muyonjo and Body of Brian had warmed up the stage. It was the right temperature for a man who’s melted hearts with his voice.

“Ssebo Headmaster…” a familiar voice seared through the Victoria Hall, Kampala Serena Hotel. “Maurice!” Hundreds of fans shouted as they paced towards the stage, a phone in a hand and excitement on their faces.

Maurice Kirya stepped on stage to officially kickstart his highly-anticipated Kirya Live 2018 edition.

A head sock perched on his head, stylish dark glasses with a golden tint and a yellow jumper, backed with an army of talented instrumentalists, he kicked off the show with ‘Headmaster’ off his Free Dreams album. What ensued thereafter was an unstoppable train of an exhilarating performance that will stay in people’s minds for a while.

Fenon had done a decent job and the shimmering lights cut through the audience like a Samurai. The VIP section was packed to the rafters with Kirya’s diehard fans and they hanged onto every song he pelted.

Song after song, his fans sang along. Lyrics spilling out of their mouths with ease. He took them on a brief detour back the memory lane and performed classics like Misubbawa. Maurice’s creative candle hardly burns out. And it was lit for the entire show. He kept on leapfrogging from song to song off his past albums and, the audience sang along to every song, on top of their voices. He performed Heart Back from his Free Dreams album and his fans, mainly ladies, made a beeline and literally handed over their hearts. ‘Crippin’ drove the audience ‘Insane’.

He would later join the audience as he performed his emotive Mulembe Gwa Kirya song. Girls, now shouting themselves hoarse, raced to the front and took a plethora of selfies with their star. “…children will rise, taller than the mountains…” he sang and, his fans, indeed rose taller than the mountains and hungrily wanted a slice of the crooner.

10:30pm.

Every space was literally occupied. The floor was teeming of people dancing and singing to Kirya’s songs. “Next year, I want to do it differently,” he said, pausing the show for a brief speech. “I want to help young talents, to give them a platform like this one. So, next year, we shall have a festival,” he added, amidst thunderous chanting from the audience.

The clock ticked on, so did the show. A few minutes past 11pm, he sang his popular gospel ballad, Nze Ani that not only took people to church, but closed the show as well. He left his ardent fans yearning for more of him, more of his songs.

On Saturday, Mabira Forest played host to one of a kind party dubbed ‘Frosty Forest Party’. Organized by the highly ranked music deejays collective, Almost Famous DJz, and sponsored by Castle Lite, the all night camping experience which was returning for season 3 was held at the Najjembe Camp Site.

Campers started setting up camp as early as 11am on Saturday and this would go on well into the night while different deejays took turns to play a variety of old and new, local and international music throughout the night and for the better part of Sunday. As revelers downed liqour bottles  and enjoyed Nyama Choma, the forest became a disco for one night out of town.

The one night out of town forest party is a theme that the Almost Famous DJs have mastered with a touch of giving their revelers something new with every edition.

The collective has recently changed the way many Ugandans party by introducing a touch of Deejay names that are not famous (hence the label) but standout when it comes to playing the music that gets partygoers dancing the nights away. This has given them reason to follow the Almost Famous DJz across the country as they play music in different regions.

The deejays that played during the forest party included; DJ Emma, DJ Kiko, Konk Mukiga, DJ Jermaine, DJ Mackus, DJ Andrey, DJ Virus and DJ Krystal.

Asked why the Almost Famous DJz were gaining a huge following, label Cofounder, Jagen, said; “We have learnt to give partygoers what they want and this is no longer deejay names but good music and a great ambiance. Going forward, we shall be having the Frost Forest Party twice a year and we invite people to come and check out a whole new camping experience. We would also like to thank all of those that turned up for the recent party.”

The UG Pineapple Comedy tour came to an end on Friday with a show stopping comedy experience at Laftaz lounge, Centenary Park in Kampala. By 8pm, Laftaz was filled with revellers ready to catch some rib cracking jokes from a host of comedians including Teacher Mpamire, Dolibondo, Optional Allan, Madrat and Chico and Amooti Omubalanguzi among others.

At the entrance to the comedy show, free cocktails and shots of the Pineapple flavour were handed out to the enthusiastic revelers who waited for Uganda’s biggest comedians. The UG Pineapple lounge was a good place to stop and have a sunshine pineapple experience with the new UG flavour.

Comedy is only an addition to this Uganda’s biggest export and helps to bring fans together. Comedy at Laftaz’s gave the comedians a chance to showcase their improved talent. While new kids like Optional Allan are coming into the industry with promising talent, older comedians like Napoleon Emma who were flat in the yesteryears are now an improvement and their delivery of jokes is superb.

Dolibondo has never found it hard to make people laugh and he did not disappoint. Amooti on the other hand is still as funny as ever. He has incorporated music into his set and this has only spiced up and improved his stage performance. Madrat and Chico are also steadily researching and learning how to turn normal everyday life into a pack of jokes.

The show was crowned with a performance from the biggest male musician on the scene today, King Saha who perfornced his best hits, Biri Biri and Very well, among others.

DJ Roja and Slick Stuart have promised a “high energy performance” at their Mixtape party which returns for the fifth edition this Friday, November 23 at Golf Course Hotel. This was during a press conference held at the hotel on Tuesday morning.

“There has been a lot of growth from first edition of the Mixtape Party, right up to the fourth one last year. We have made a number of innovations and we can promise that there is going to be a lot of energy and high performance at this year’s edition,” Slick Stuart said, adding that the duo also has a surprise planned for the day.

This year has been a big one for Slick Stuart and Roja who took over the airwaves with their hit song, Very Well featuring King Saha.

The Mixtape party will not only feature live video mixing by the headlining duo of DJ Roja and Slick Stuart; but will also feature Selector J, Fik Fameica, King Saha and Spice Diana to spice up the performances.

Speaking at the press conference, Uganda Waragi Brand Manager, Agaba Tumusiime said, “This is not our first ride with the deejay duo and Uganda Waragi is pleased to be on board yet again for what will be an explosive party featuring the best deejays in town. You will not want to miss this!”
