MC Esco

Ugandan musicians have in the past decried lack of ample airplay on local media platforms and in nightclubs. This has led to the birth of many Ugandan Music themed-nights at various nightspots. The latest to join the fray is media personality and events emcee, MC Esco who is planning to introduce his own night centered on Ugandan music.

We have learnt that Esco will be unveiling his theme night this Friday at Rock Bar. According to Esco, besides local music, the night will also be shinning a spotlight on local deejays by giving a new deejay every week a platform to showcase their artistry.

“Friday nights are no longer as vibrant as they used to be and have grown a tad boring for many. With this theme night, we bring a new offering for party goers and also hope to entice young corporates into loving Ugandan music.” Esco further noted.

The first-ever Koroga Festival in Uganda took place on Saturday at The Gardens, Najeera.

By Our Reporter

Food lovers around Kampala gathered together over the weekend to enjoy the first-ever Koroga Festival that took place in Uganda on Saturday, December 8 at The Gardens, Najjera.

The Koroga Festival, an annual event that has its roots in Kenya is one of the most sought after events in the country. The word “koroga” means “to mix” or “to stir” in the Swahili language, and is an apt representation of all that happened on a day centered around food and drink.

Having been successfully initiated onto the Ugandan scene this month with Tusker Lite onboard, the festival attracted large numbers of food enthusiasts and beer lovers for a Saturday afternoon chill.

“Koroga Festival is a fun event meant to unite Ugandans with fun approaches to enjoying the simplest things in life. The basic starter pack includes indulging in cooking and drinking the finest the world has to offer and what better timing than to incorporate the event into this festive merry season,” said My Food Network’s Mark Kaheru, the organisers of the festival.

The first-ever Koroga Festival in Uganda took place on Saturday at The Gardens, Najeera.

It was a delightful afternoon of munching on scrumptious snacks and enjoying mouthwatering meals cooked by some of the city’s best known foodies. The event featured selected groups who took part in the friendly cooking competitions, with participants provided the necessary elements and ingredients to whip up delicious meals and then being judged based on the tastiness, quickness and creativity that they had exhibited.

“Good food is best paired with Tusker Lite, which is why our brand has been involved in a stream of food-oriented festivals throughout the year within Kampala. The Koroga Festival is a great way to bring people together during this
festive season,” said Cathy Twesigye, Brand Manager, Premium Beers UBL.

The Koroga Festival diners were also treated to a full bar with table service and delicious ready-to-order starters to keep them busy as the cooking went on. Revelers later ended the day to the sounds of friendly amateur karaoke and laughter.

Samson BarangaSamson Baranga of The Observer newspaper is due for treatment in the United States following injuries sustained while taking pictures at the social media tax protests led by Robert Kyagulanyi in July this year.

Baranga, an award winning fashion writer and photographer was assaulted by plain clothed security personnel who left him bruised and with neck problems after he was hit from the back with a baton.

Local hospitals including Kibuli Hospital gave him treatment but reports we have indicate that he has never gotten better. He recently got a chance to travel abroad and he will use his stay to also seek specialized treatment.

Uganda police fired teargas and bullets at social media tax to disperse protesters who had gathered to protest a controversial tax on the use of social media.

Bakiga Nation which has over the years grown into one of the most sought-after cultural events on the social calendar returned for its 6th edition on Sunday at UMA show grounds. Unlike the previous editions, revelers had to pay a cover charge to partake in Sunday’s festivities. However, this did not deter the overzealous revelers as they still flocked Lugogo in droves to celebrate the Kiga cultural heritage. By 12 noon, there was already a sizeable crowd at the venue and it continued to swell as the hours wore on.

It was a funfilled day as the exuberant partiers reveled in traditional dances and feasted on food and drinks unique to Bakiga like their local brew enturire which was served in gourds. At some point the crowd could also been seen dancing in unison to ekitaguuro, a Kiga cultural dance. Other fun activities included Kwepena, sack race and rope skipping among others.  There were also music performances from singers Shine Omukiga, Tamba and Qwela Band, much to the delight of the delirious crowd.

The Nile Special-sponsored event went on till midnight.

Bebe Cool

By Our Reporter

Gagamel boss, Bebe Cool is finally set to resume public performances. The “Love Your Everyday” star who is returning from a sabbatical in the US has announced that he will return on stage this festive season. He will hold his first performance in over three months on Boxing Day as he headlines his annual “Tondeka e’Kiwatule” concert at Kiwatule Recreational Center.

Bebe Cool had previously suspended public performances over safety concerns. This came after he was pelted with bottles and stones during the Swangz All Star concert late August purportedly over his political inclination.

“I had chosen silence as a means to exercise my tolerance for the political events that are currently transpiring in the country. Unfortunately, during my recent performance I was pelted with bottles and stones by a group of people purportedly because I do not subscribe to their political beliefs,” he explained his decision to halt public performances. “For the safety of myself, family, friends and fans, I regrettably would like to announce that I will not be making any public performances until further notice.”

With public performances on halt, Bebe Cool decided to blow off the steam by going on vacation in the US. During his stay abroad, he also managed to record two music videos “Wasibuka Wa” which was released last week and “Easy”, which is expected out later this month.

Bebe Cool who jetted back into the country on Monday this week while addressing media also announced that this year’s “Tondeka e’Kiwatule” show will be dedicated to charity. He revealed that part of the proceeds from the concert shall cater for school fees of 200 pupils.

“I am calling upon music lovers from all corners of Uganda to come to Kiwatule Recreational Center on Boxing Day and support local music talent but at the same time have it in mind that part of the money you pay for the concert shall cater for paying schools fees of 200 pupils in a school I will announce soon.” Bebe Cool said.

“It will be the first time I am performing on stage after a two months’ absence and I have many surprises as well for you,” he added

Maleek Berry at Blankets and Wine

By Our Reporter

Sunday’s Blankets and Wine event was the last of 2018, and for the thousands of fans in attendance, perhaps a case of saving the best for last. The year’s final installment of the picnic-style music festival featured British-Nigerian star Maleek Berry as the headline act, and the record producer and artiste would go on to present Ugandan Afro-beat music fans with the perfect Christmas gift.

Appearing on stage minutes after 8pm at the Lugogo Cricket Oval, the West African entertainer immediately had fans “in the zone” with teasers of some of his finest songs such Kontrol, as well as a host of other tracks he has worked on with prominent artistes including Wizkid, Davido, Wale, Fuse ODG, Runtown and Iyanya among others.

For revelers who had begun strolling through the gates as early as 2pm, this was well worth the wait. As the Tusker Malt flowed, so did the food and fun, with mats and blankets set out and fans making merry as they enjoyed performances by Mr. Mankwa, Farouq Farouq, Tamba and songstress Irene Ntale, who formed the cast of local artistes lined up to curtain raise for the main performer of the day—Maleek Berry.

When the British-Nigerian’s turn came, he did not disappoint. Exuding energy, his electric performance instantly had revelers singing and dancing along to songs like Kontrol, Been Calling and The Matter, many of which were sampled off his latest Afro-beat album, “Last Daze of Summer.” For those who had turned up at the Cricket Oval for one last Blankets and Wine show for 2018, this was a Christmas gift presented early.

Cielo Lounge

By Our Reporter

The ever-vibrant Kampala nightlife will yet again welcome another new nightspot this weekend. This comes after we learnt that Cielo Lounge, a rooftop bar located at The Cube, Kisementi will officially open its doors to the public on Saturday, December 22nd.

According to Henok Goito, one of the directors at the bar establishment, Cielo Lounge was designed from scratch, converting an open space into a marvel of a hangout.

“This was an empty space and we built this lounge up from scratch,” he relayed as he gave media a tour of the lounge. “It took us one year to design this place and make it come alive.”

The lounge whose name translates to “heavens above” is located on the 5th floor of The Cube building. It is vast with glass walls, and allows for sitting both inside and outside. It also boasts of  a water fountain which encloses the VIP section.

“The idea is that nothing should constrict your view to the outside so that wherever you decide to sit in the bar you will still have a nice view. This why we even have no tall fridges at this bar.” He added.

The roottop bar which will be open 24/7 also doubles as a restaurant serving lunch and dinner with local foods as their main menu.

The grand opening ceremony will be hosted by comedian Patrick Salvado.

The event filled with charm brought together many prominent faces, the biggest being South African rapper Nasty C. Those with a sweeter palate went for the Ciroc cocktails. To most revelers it was agreed that this was the party of the year.
