Rema in Tikula video

By Our Reporter

Singer Rema Namakula has dismissed reports claiming that she is choking on debts.

It had been alleged that Rema had sold off several of her valuable assets to fund her introduction ceremony. The rumors become rife after it emerged that the singer’s car, a Prado TX model, had also been put on sale soon after her introduction. It was alleged this was the singer’s effort to raise more money to pay off debts.

Speaking to media on Wednesday, the “Gutujja” hitmaker insisted that the sale of her car has nothing to do with her current financial position, adding that all the service providers were duly paid.

“You saw how big my introduction ceremony was. The money from selling the car would not have even been enough to feed the guests.” Rema said.

“I am not in debt, and that is one thing I am very scared of,” she added. “I always pay all my service providers promptly and this is why you have never seen anyone come out complaining or say I have defaulted.”

Rema introduced her lover, Dr Hamza Sebunya, in a lavish ceremony that was held in November last year.

CCBA’s Simon Kaheru (R), musician Eddy Kenzo and representatives from ESSI share a moment at the launch of the tree planting campaign held on Friday at the Coca Cola plant in Namanve.

By Our Reporter

Eddy Kenzo has been named green ambassador. The singer will spearhead a conservation campaign in which he will raise awareness about climate change and also encourage masses across the country to plant trees.

Championed by Environment Social Safeguards International (ESSI) in partnership with Coca-Cola Beverages Africa(CCBA) in Uganda and National Forestry Authority, the initiative targets to plant over 4000 trees in effort to conserve the environment.

“I am excited to be working with ESSI on this campaign to plant trees across the country and want to encourage all Ugandans to join this initiative,” Kenzo said. “Planting a tree is a blessing because you are giving life while also making our country look beautiful. It is time for us to all go green.”

According to Khasim Ngabirano, the CEO Environment Social Safeguard International, the campaign aims to create awareness about the importance of tree planting in combating negative effects of climatic change. He noted that trees play an essential role in mitigating the impact of climate change and we therefore should act now to mitigate its negative effects.

Simon Kaheru, the Public Affairs & Communications Director Coca-Cola Beverages Africa in Uganda expressed excitement about this partnership saying: “We are looking to beat climate change but also protecting the environment by planting trees. Planting trees is one of the most important things we can do as Coca-Cola Beverages Africa in Uganda to contribute to conserving the environment.

“At Coca-Cola, we place priority on watershed protection and conservation, and we are proud of the work that ESSI has done in Uganda to help restore trees. The trees not only add beauty and provide shade but they also provide a barrier to storms and help retain water in the soil, which is very important for the country.”

Uganda’s forest cover has been depleted to 8% up from 24% in 1990s, and this is largely attributed to human encroachment for different activities such as agriculture and urbanization.

DJ Mackus entertaining revelers at the Evoke Night season 3 finale.

By Our Reporter

DJ Mackus is crying foul play. The disc spinner who was one of the Evoke Night season 3 finalists has revealed that he has never received his prize money.

Mackus took to social media to express his disgruntlement. “On 28th November I was ranked the first runner up of the ‘Evoke season Three Finale’ but I was only left with a paper with figures,” he wrote. “What happened to the prize?”

Unlike the first two seasons where individuals were just given a stage to showcase their talent, season 3 saw talent compete for a big cash prize. From deejays to dancers to singers to poets, talents were pitted against each other over the different episodes which culminated in a final showdown held November last year where three finalists were rewarded.

The finale saw H2C Dance Group ultimately crowned champions, taking home a cash prize of UGX 2,000,000 and an iPhone X. DJ Mackus came in second place and was rewarded with UGX 1,500,000 while in 3rd place was a one Mark who was awarded UGX 1,000,000.

According to a congratulatory letter sent to the deejay, he was supposed to receive the prize money not later than December 15, 2019.

When reached for a comment, Timothy Bukenya, the team lead at Evoke said, “There is a delay because we postponed December Evoke Night and yet we must handover at an Evoke Night. Next one is February or March.”

Judith Babirye and Paul Musoke Sebulime during their introduction ceremony.

By Our Reporter

Gospel singer and Buikwe Woman MP, Judith Babirye is divorced again. The singer’s marriage to fellow MP Paul Musoke Ssebulime has been dissolved by court.

Babirye and Sebulime were married in a traditional ceremony held in July 2018 in Bunga, Kampala.

But barely a year into their union, Sebulime filed for divorce. According to court documents, Ssebulime testified that he had not seen or heard from Babirye since 22 December 2018. In fact, he did not know of his wife’s whereabouts for seven months he waited before petitioning court.

Ssebulime also accused Babirye of denying him conjugal rights. He said that the couple had not been intimate since the second week of August 2018.

He further said that Babirye’s attitude towards his friends discouraged him from freely interacting with them for fear of upsetting her and this caused him psychological and mental torture because he was forced to live a lonely life.

The family division of the High Court, on 20 December 2019, finally annulled their marriage on grounds of cruelty. It ruled that Babirye’s actions were not a demonstration of any commitment to the success of the marriage and therefore the two could no longer stay together as husband and wife.

Judith Bairye was married to Samuel Niiwo in her first marriage, with whom they have a daughter together. They divorced in 2017.

Patrick 'Salvado' Idringi

By Our Reporter

Arguably Uganda’s funniest man, comedian Patrick “Salvado” Idringi is set for a rib-cracking show dubbed ‘Africa Laughs’ come February 14, 2020 at Kololo Airstrip.

The natural, blunt and hilarious “Man from Ombokolo” who draws his humour from events in society and his village Ombokolo celebrates 10 years since he traded his engineering career for stand-up comedy.

Addressing journalists at a press conference held at Speke Apartments to officially announce the show, the much sought-after comedian revealed that comedy has changed his life and helped him grow as a person.

“I want to thank God that 10 years later, after I decided to take this path, I am still here and going strong.” Salvado told media. “I must say it has not been an easy journey but I have loved every bit of it and very excited to be celebrating this milestone.”

First held in 2013, Africa Laughs in partnership with The Singleton will this year be running its fifth lap and to celebrate the milestone, Salvado will be joined by international comedy giants like Kenny Blaq, Eric Omondi, Eddie Kadi and Alfred Kaingo in addition to our own crème de la crème, such as Daniel Omara, Prince Emma, Ronnie Mc Vex, Agnes Akite and Madrat & Chiko. Tanzanian bongo star Harmonize will also grace the event.

“Valentine’s Day also happens to be my birthday. Not only will I be celebrating 10 years in the industry, I will also be celebrating 35 years on this earth. It is going to a special show. ” He added.

Salvador’s blend of laugh-out-loud humour and attention to ridiculous details while narrating stories has earned him a widespread following across Africa and beyond, making the laugh fiesta the most-anticipated comedy show of the year.

Chaka Demus & Pliers

By Our Reporter

Jamaican reggae duo, Chaka Demus & Pliers are not coming to Uganda, we can confirm. Popular for songs like “Tease Me” and “Murder She Wrote” among others, the Jamaican stars had been rumored to be the headliners for a Valentine’s Day show to be held at Kololo Independence Grounds. As it turns out, it is just that, a rumour.

Salavdo who is hosting the Africa Laughs show at the Kololo Independence Grounds on Valentine’s Day debunked the rumours while speaking to media on Tuesday.

“Chaka Demus & Pliers coming to my show were simply that — rumours,”  Salvado said. “This is why you have not see any artwork or official communication from us about them.”

Salvado, whose Africa Laughs show is returning for the 5th edition, further revealed that the show will instead feature Tanzanian bongo star Harmonize.

“Harmonize is going to bring the Valentines feeling to the show,” he noted.

The Africa Laughs show will also be graced by top comedians from across the continent like Nigeria’s Kenny Blaq, Kenya’s Eric Omondi, Congo’s Eddie Kadi and Zimbabwe’s Alfred Kainga. They will crack up comedy lovers alongside Uganda’s very own like Daniel Omara, Prince Emma, Ronnie Mc Vex, Agnes Akite and Madrat & Chiko among others.

The show is slated for 14th February this year.

East African Meat Carnival

By Our Reporter

The East African Meat Carnival, a popular meaty food event returned for its first 2020 edition over the weekend at The Gardens in Najjera.

Powered by Tusker Lite, revelers preferred to dance all night to the Utake music mixes that only DJ maestros Benon and Cisse could perfectly handle as they mixed and played East African throwbacks throughout the night keeping the revelers on their feet for most of the night while others were seen basking to the old school East African throwbacks and reminiscing about the good ol’ days.

For those who’s agenda was the famous meat fiesta, foodies were treated to the deliciously cooked ‘Mutura’s, stir fried pork, roast chicken with the popular Kenyan sausage delicacy Mutura proving to be a house favourite for many who attended Saturday’s meat feast.

As always, it was a pallete-thrilling sight with enough enticing meaty treats to leave ones mouth dripping and salivating as foodies, friends and family came out in large numbers proving that ‘Januworry’ is no worry for them.

Senior Chef, Mark Kaheru did not disappoint his guests as he paid attention to the nitty gritty details while preparing the different mouthwatering meaty recipes that are worthy of being served at five-star hotels with many looking forward to the next meat-up come February.

Comedy Store Uganda has donated basic items and cash to Katalemwa Cheshire Rehabilitation Home

By Our Reporter

Comedy Store Uganda has donated basic items and cash to Katalemwa Cheshire Rehabilitation Home, which supports children with special needs.

A team from Comedy Store led by the Director and Host, Alex Muhangi, visited the rehabilitation centre situated in Mpererwe outside Kampala on Tuesday afternoon.

They made a donation of food items such as beans, rice, posho, sugar, cooking oil, as well as other basic household items like detergents.

The team arrived at Katalemwa at around 1pm and was received by Samali Matovu, the Executive Director of the Center. They were later guided on a tour of the facility including the departments of physiotherapy, orthopedics, occupational therapy, speech and language, as well as workshop where appliances for children and people with special needs are manufactured.

They also toured the dormitories and interacted with some of the children and their caretakers.

In his remarks, comedian Alex Muhangi applauded the Management of Katalemwa for the commendable work done in supporting people with special needs.

“I would love to appreciate very much the Management of Katalemwa. As Comedy Store, we reached out and felt it was important to come and see the work you do here, and support in whichever way possible,” Alex said.

Muhangi handed over a cash contribution to the Management.

“We [Comedy Store] believe this is just the beginning of what’s possible. We reached out to other partners, regarding this initiative and we feel like the next time, we will make an even greater impact”.

This year, Katalemwa will make 50 years since its establishment. The core mandate of the facility is Medical rehabilitation but it also offers other services like psychosocial, educational support, vocational skills training and community empowerment.

It is home to children with some of the unique conditions such as cerebral palsy, Spina Bifida, Hydrocephalus, amputees, and those that are physically handicapped.

According to the Director, Samalie Matovu, Katalemwa helps serves over 15,000 children both at the centre and in the community throughout the year.

However, she said the problem is big and that the children who reside at the facility are just a small fraction of children suffering out there.

She thanked Comedy Store for reaching out and supporting the center.

“It is a very good gesture that you’ve showed to the community out there. You are most welcome, we are very glad, and we believe this is the beginning of a very long term relationship with you”. Samali noted.

She said the home still requires support, citing the old buildings which require renovation.

He explained that deliberations about forming the association started following widespread backlash when fellow comedian King Kong passed away in June 2018 and was not given a proper send off by fellow comedians.

“It is then that we decided to create a unifying body for all comedians to address our challenges and other issues affecting the industry,” Hannington Bugingo added. “We held different meetings where comedians raised their concerns which were used to form the basis for the association.”

The Uganda Comedians Association

The association was officially registered on 16th January 2019, and has for one year been laying ground work in preparation for its launch.

“In the one year, we have been mobilizing resources, networking and finding a way to work together amicably.” He further noted. “We are now rolling out officially, and will be enrolling more comedians and holding workshops across the country.”

While membership is open to all comedians across the country, individuals are required to pay an annual subscription fee of Ugx 100,000/=. The association so far over 30 members who are fully registered.

The interim committee includes: Hannington Bugingo (President), Patrick Salvado Idringi (Vice President), Agnes Akite (Secretary), Timothy Nyanzi (Finance), Ehmah Napoleon (Spokesperson), and Abby Mukiibi (Patron).

Different comedians have expressed excitement and optimism about the future of Uganda’s comedy with the formation an association to help streamline the industry.

Patriko Mujuuka, a veteran comedian had this to say: “We have had a problem with vulgarity in the industry. It is good that we now have a team that can censor what content is being delivered on stage.”

Alex Muhangi, the Comedy Store Uganda Director also said, “the association will help us build the industry by creating platforms where emerging comedians can nurture their talent and grow into big stars.”

Alex Muhangi (R) poses with Patrick Salvado Idringi

By Our Reporter

Comedians, Patrick Salvado Idringi and Alex Muhangi have for awhile been dogged by rumors of a bitter rivalry.

The rumors were stoked after Salvado started a weekly comedy night dubbed “Just Comedy”, which many industry observers interpreted as move to directly compete with Muhangi’s Comedy Store, also a weekly show.

The two comedians have continued to clash, with a more recent development being their upcoming shows which are both set on the same day. Salvado will hold his Africa Laughs show at Kololo Independence Grounds on Valentine’s Day while Muhangi will on the same day be across town at Mestil Hotel where he will host Nigerian singer Rude Boy.

Despite the clashes, Salvado and Muhangi both insist there is no bad blood between them.

Muhangi said that they are just two people in the same business and can co-exist without beefing each other, likening their relationship to fuel brand companies, Shell and Total as well beverage companies, CocaCola and Pepsi which he says are competing favorably.

“There is no fight between me and Salvado. We are simply two people in the same business.” Alex Muhangi said.

On his part, Salvado explained that holding shows on the same day is merely a coincidence because every one chooses a date according to what makes the most business sense for them.

“Before you decide on a date for a show, you look at many factors like venue and target audience among others. Looking at Valentine’s Day, it falls on a Friday, and therefore this would make a good day to hold a show because many people will be looking to go out,” Salvado explained.

“Two comedians holding their shows on the same day does not mean we are fighting, it is about preference of the day and what makes business sense for you.” He added.

Bebe Cool performs at the Guinness Night Football event in Lagos, Nigeria.

By Our Reporter

It was a good day for Uganda at the Pan African Guinness Night Football Extravangaza that was held in Lagos, Nigeria on Friday.

Uganda was well represented by Bebe Cool who scored a goal to help his team Bold United, a collection of African players and super stars including Nigeria’s Davido and Uganda’s Solomon Walter Muleyi who was also on the score sheet triumph over Gold Harps with a narrow 3-2 victory.

Prior to the games, Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand took on celebrities in a two-touch challenge that was won by Bebe Cool. Rio also featured in the 5-Aside game playing a free role.

Gold Harps that was captained by Uganda’s Andrew Asiimwe Elochu also had another Ugandan Ahmed Kassa playing alongside Sauti Sol.

Sauti Sol made up for the loss with a scintillating performance that crowned the night with songs like Africa featuring Yemi Alade and Melanin that was recorded with Lagos homeboy Patoranking. But it was their Kuliko Chana that had the Kenyans in the audience singing their lungs out.

Homeboy Davido was in his comfort zone with an adoring legion of fans as he did songs like Fall and Risky.

Cameroon’s Salatiel showed that the West Africans are as good at music as they are at soccer when he took to the stage.

Bebe Cool

Bebe Cool did Uganda proud with a high energy performance, hitting the stage with Up and Whine accompanied by Nigerian dancers. He also did Wire Wire and closed his set with Love You Everyday that is popular across the continent.

True to the concept of holding Guinness Night Football in unexpected locations, the Pan African edition was held in the terminal of the The Hanger, a business aircraft jet airport adjacent to the Legend Hotel.

Away from the music and soccer, there was a silent cinema showing Nollywood classics – what is a Nigerian experience without Nollywood. There were also other games like human snooker, Play Station plus body painting and henna.

At the end if the night, the Ugandans in the audience left with satisfaction written in their faces as they had been well represented.
