Uganda Film Festival (UFF)

By Our Reporter

The nominees for this year’s Uganda Film Festival (UFF) have been unveiled.

This year, about 307 films were submitted, with 50 of these being nominated across the 25 categories available. Furthermore, unlike in past years, when many filmmakers prioritized making films in English, a good number of films in the mix this year are in indigenous languages.

Three films, Eleanor Nabwiso’s Christmas Together, Nisha Kalema’s Makula, and Ibrahim Hammis Mayanja’s Omukululo, dominate most of the categories, such as acting, screenplay, and technical ones.

Makula leads the nominations with 12, including Best Actress for Kalema; the film follows an extensive yet secret ring of human and organ traffickers, while Omukululo, with 10 nominations, is about everything that could go wrong when the truth is kept under the rug.

Other films with multiple nominations include Kevin Jones Nabukenya’s Soccer Heart and Jerry Ssesanga’s Lions of Buganda.

The festival that has been held since 2013 aims at promoting and showcasing Ugandan films to both the local and international audiences.

Party animals are in for a treat as the third edition of the Tusker Lite Neon Rave heads to Jinja this weekend. To be held at Galaxy Auto Spa on Saturday, May 25, it promises an unforgettable night of futuristic sensations, music and dance under the neon lights.

Following the overwhelming success of the first two editions—first at Kampala’s H20 and then at Mbarara’s Soho Lounge—the Neon Rave series has quickly become the talk of the town. Both events saw a massive turnout of young trendsetters and party-goers, setting the stage for what promises to be a spectacular night in Jinja.

Revellers can expect a lineup of top-notch DJs who know exactly how to keep the party going. The entertainment line-up includes; Aine Derrick, DJ Armon, DJ Miles, DJ Alisha, MC JP, and DJ Emmanice. These party animals are renowned for their ability to drop the hottest tracks and keep the vibe alive all night long.

But it’s not just about the music. The Tusker Lite Neon Rave promises an immersive experience with aesthetically pleasing, futuristic elements that will take the event to the next level.

Renowned radio presenter turned politician, DJ Jacob Omutuuze, has delivered a harsh assessment of the Ugandan music industry’s current state, asserting that it has significantly deteriorated.

Omutuuze advised fans to calm their expectations for the year, citing a widespread lack of effort among artists.

With years of experience in media and music analysis, Omutuuze has witnessed the industry’s fluctuations firsthand. According to him, the industry’s vitality has waned, with a noticeable drop in new releases this year.

Omutuuze pointed out that many artists seem more focused on organizing concerts than producing fresh music. This trend, he argues, reflects a troubling shift in priorities.

Rather than creating new content, some artists are investing their efforts in music federations and associations, hoping to secure government funding instead of striving for musical innovation.

Omutuuze warned fans against high expectations, predicting a scarcity of hit songs this year. He expressed doubts about the longevity of any successful tracks that might emerge, suggesting they would quickly fade from the market.

Omutuuze lamented that the Ugandan music industry is struggling to keep pace with neighboring countries.

In a recent interview, the singing duo of Ugaboys Africa shared their thoughts on the current state of songwriting in Uganda, and they argued that Uganda has yet to see a certified songwriter since the passing of the late Mowzey Radio.

According to them, despite receiving offers from various songwriters eager to pen lyrics for them, they often find themselves disappointed upon hearing the proposed lyrics.

In fact, they expressed a desire to write for these self-proclaimed songwriters, highlighting a gap in the industry’s standards.

Moreover, when confronted with the achievements of some songwriters who have garnered awards, Ugaboys vehemently dismissed these accolades, suggesting that the true masters of songwriting are yet to make their mark and that the few that have won awards didn’t deserve them as they emphasized those who truly understand the craft to come for what rightfully belongs to them.

Many writers reach out with a desire to sell music to us and on sending their demos, you listen to what they’ve penned down but in actual sense feel like we should be the ones doing the writing for them. All these writers need help, they should be written for.
