“Partnering with Guinness to bring this vision to life is a testament to the brand’s forward-thinking approach and commitment to driving innovation in the arts. Together, we are shaping the future of creativity,” remarked Hasashya.

“This year, our production of the play serves a noble purpose: supporting Special Olympics Uganda, a chapter of Special Olympics International. This organization utilizes sports to provide vital support and assistance to individuals with special intellectual disabilities, offering them a sense of normalcy and inclusion in their lives. Their goal to establish a dedicated facility underscores the challenges faced by families in Uganda who rely on their services. Through our play, we aim to raise awareness and much-needed funds to aid them in their mission.” She added.

The introduction of theatre expands the vibrant spectrum of offerings within the Bright House, which already includes Fashion, Art, Music, Sports, Content Creation, and more.

Throughout the month of May, the brand will host mini-Bright House showcases at the National Theatre, providing aspiring creatives with a platform to showcase their talents and connect with like-minded individuals.

Reach A Hand, Netherlands Embassy partner to shed light on SRHR Challenges

By Our Reporter

On Tuesday, Design Hub was abuzz with anticipation as The Netherlands Embassy and Reach A Hand Uganda (RAHU) organized a special screening event of the movie, Sabotage.

The exclusive session aimed to discuss crucial Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) challenges, particularly focusing on unsafe abortions and sexual violence, through a social-cultural lens.

The event commenced with welcoming remarks from Karin Boven, the Ambassador of the Netherlands Embassy in Uganda, followed by the screening of “Sabotage” which showcased the impactful narratives sourced from real-life stories in Uganda, and subsequently a panel discussion.

Among the distinguished panelists were individuals deeply passionate about addressing SRHR challenges such as Daisy Kandole, from the SRHR alliance team and Uganda’s representative to the Netherlands Youth Advisory Council. “As a young woman in Uganda, ‘Sabotage’ resonates deeply with the realities many of us face. It courageously sheds light on the challenges of sexual violence and unsafe abortions, which are sadly all too common,” she stated.

The purpose of the screening and panel discussion was to showcase the realities of SRHR challenges faced by young people in Uganda, spark meaningful discussions among stakeholders and collaborate on actionable solutions to address issues such as sexual violence and unsafe abortions.

Sharifah Nakate, a cast member of “Sabotage,” reflected on her experience shooting the film, describing it as “emotionally intense and enlightening.” She hoped audiences would remove the urgency of addressing SRHR issues and the importance of consent and bodily autonomy.

Another cast member, Denis Kinani, discussed the sobering experience of portraying the role of a perpetrator in the film. He urged fellow men to challenge toxic masculinity and stand in solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence.

Judith Adokorach from the Netherlands Embassy emphasized the Netherlands’ strategic objective of supporting Uganda in achieving SDG 3 (Healthy lives and Wellbeing for all) and SDG 5 (Gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls) by ensuring everyone’s sexual and reproductive health rights are met. She noted that the movie highlights controversies, dilemmas, and uncertainties in the policy environment that sometimes hinder the provision of necessary services, such as safe and legal abortion.

At the event, Kemigisha Elizabeth from FIDA weighed in with legitimate expertise as she addressed the legal framework surrounding safe abortion, stressing the importance of clarity to ensure women’s rights and access to safe healthcare. “To resolve these uncertainties, there’s a need for clear and accurate information dissemination, advocacy for legal reforms that prioritize women’s health and rights, and collaboration between stakeholders to address systemic barriers,” she said.

The screening and dialogue highlighted the collaborative efforts of RAHU and its partners in initiating crucial conversations aimed at mindset change and policy improvements for the benefit of young people.

The Phantom of the Opera

By Our Reporter

Kampala witnessed an evening of unparalleled glamour and artistic splendor as theatre enthusiasts flocked the Kampala Serena for the theatre edition of the Guinness Bright House.

Collaborating with Timeless Arts, Guinness orchestrated a historic rendition of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic, ‘The Phantom of the Opera,’ featuring an all-black cast for the first time in the play’s history.

From the moment guests stepped onto the red carpet, the ambiance exuded sophistication, with attendees impeccably dressed in the evening’s Masked Glam theme. As they mingled, savouring a perfectly chilled Guinness and signature Guinness cocktails, anticipation swelled for the main event.

As the curtains rose, the air crackled with excitement, signaling the beginning of a theatrical journey like no other. With masterful storytelling and electrifying performances, the cast transported the audience into the heart of Broadway, infusing the production with a distinctly Ugandan flair.

At its core, ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ resonates with themes of unrequited love and societal ostracization, mirroring Timeless Arts’ mission to shed light on mental health issues faced by intellectually disabled youth. Through their partnership with Special Olympics Uganda, the production aimed to build a facility for them to have a space to call their own.

Karen Hasahya, CEO of Timeless Arts, expressed her joy at seeing this vision come to fruition, emphasizing the importance of challenging stigma and supporting vulnerable communities. “I cannot tell you how happy I am to see this day come to fruition. We wanted to shed a light on the stigma that people with intellectual disability face and the mental issues and strain it causes, but also we wanted to be able to give back to special Olympics Uganda to build them a facility and I am happy that today’s show is one step towards realising that dream,” said Hasahya.

For Guinness, the collaboration represents a commitment to championing Uganda’s creative industry. Roy Ronald Tumwizere, the Brand Manager, reflected on the significance of staging the play with an all-black cast, envisioning the Bright House platform as a beacon for cultural diversity and artistic innovation.

“Tonight, has left me speechless… ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ is a theatrical masterpiece, and to contribute to its legacy with an all-black cast for the first time is beyond words. It’s a milestone evening where we’ve truly immersed ourselves in our mission to not only collaborate with, but also support the Ugandan creative scene and our Art. This is the essence of what we aspire the Guinness Bright House to embody,” said Tumwizere.

Following its debut at the Kampala Serena, the theatrical extravaganza will continue its run at the National Theatre throughout May, offering audiences the chance to experience this groundbreaking production every weekend.
