By Our Reporter

Friday evening was a nostalgic one for Irish clansmen in Uganda as they celebrated their traditional Irish holiday; Saint Patrick’s Day at Kololo based Irish pub, Otters Bar.

Guests who attended the green-themed event were treated to a night fueled with lots of fun and exciting activities such as Irish music by Bachram, an Irish band, Irish foods, Irish dancing and the beer that was home away from home, The Guinness Draught, fittingly served to cheery and delighted guests.

Amid the fears and anxieties of the spread of the Corona Virus pandemic, celebrations of the Irish holiday went on here in Uganda despite the cancellation in Ireland.

Speaking to journalists, the Irish Ambassador, William Carlos shared his excitement upon being able to celebrate St Patrick’s Day here in Uganda.

“Uganda is probably among the very few countries around the world that are celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. It is special to us and we are grateful to have been able to celebrate it with friends and family,” said Carlos.

The highlight of the night was when Irish Dancers Ronan Kelly, a five time Irish Dancing World Champion and Gemma Holmes took over the stage to show off their famous Irish moves that attracted thunderous cheers and applause from the already merry crowd.

Vinka premieres Red Card video at Fame Lounge

By Our Reporter

Musician Vinka has released a brand new video. Dubbed “Red Card”, it was premiered on Monday evening at Fame Lounge and is aimed at promoting responsible drinking.

While performing during the premiere event, Vinka told revelers it is okay to have fun and celebrate life by consuming alcohol as long as they make responsible drinking decisions.

“Don’t drink and drive. Live is very precious!” She cautioned.

Vinka is the ambassador for the Red Card campaign, an initiative by Uganda Breweries Limited aimed at reminding alcohol consumers and music lovers to shun drink driving, an irresponsible act that could cause harm to their lives.

Revelers enjoy themselves as Vinka premiered Red Card video at Fame Lounge

Speaking during the premier, UBL Public Policy and Sustainability Manager David Onyango said Uganda Breweries decided to use music to amplify the responsible drinking message and reach consumers in their favorite hangout spots where the consumption happens.

“Enjoying alcohol is part of life in many societies around the world. It is a part of how people socialize and celebrate. However just like other products, when misused, alcohol can lead to individual and social harm. As a responsible company, UBL we would like to see consumers of our products make responsible drinking a valued and enjoyable part of life.” He said.

Uganda Breweries Limited has for the last 7 years been running the Red Card campaign to inform, sensitize and engage consumers about the dangers of alcohol misuse.

A Ka Dope band perform at the "One Night Only" edition launch

By Our Reporter

A Ka Dope, a platform for emerging musicians to showcase their craft, has announced a partnership with Universal Music Group, a global record label, in a move aimed at further elevating Ugandan talent.

The partnership was announced on Tuesday during the launch of their new season dubbed “One Night Only”.

Launching the 2020 edition, Afsa Umutesi, the Team Lead at a Ka Dope revealed that they have given stage to over 200 different Ugandan artistes in the past three years, but are now looking to offer even bigger opportunities for Ugandan musicians.

“A Ka Dope was started to give platform to underground artistes whose music was not getting played on radio as well as talented musicians who could not hold big concerts because they could not attract corporate sponsors.” Afsa Umutesi explained.

“We have since grown and realized that the platform we are offering is limited. Our goal now is to give a bigger platform and greater opportunities for Ugandan talent.”  She added.

Sponsored by Uganda Waragi and Roke Telkom, the new season will feature seven different shows, each offering a unique and dynamic experience. It will open with Ykee Benda on April 17th.

Speaking during the launch, Uganda Waragi brand manager Agaba Tumusiime said, “At Uganda Waragi, we celebrate the vibrant Ugandan spirit and there is no better stage to express your vibrant Ugandan spirit than the A Ka Dope stage. I encourage all artistes to bring on their A-game and show the world how vibrant and amazing Ugandan talent is.”

The launch ceremony was capped with entertainment from the A Ka Dope band led by Essie, performing a mix of their original compositions and cover songs.

Zuena gets backlash over Old Taxi park renovation

Bebe Cool’s wife, Zuena Kirema, seems to have rubbed some of her followers the wrong way when she made a suggestion about the old taxi park.

CORONAVIRUS TIP – Looking after yourself, your family & friends is important through these stressful times. WHO encourages everyone at home to do simple & fun physical activities to stay healthy & active Flexed biceps. Follow Ministry of Health Guidelines.

Following the presidential directive to halt all public means of transport over coronavirus, this morning, the old taxi park in downtown Kampala was empty. The usually busy transport hub had no activity at all something many had never seen.

After looking at the photos and videos, Zuena made an innocent suggestion to KCCA to swing into action and renovate the park since it will remain like decongested for the next 14 days.

KCCA now that the old taxi park is empty, don’t you think you should use this chance to renovate it?

They can use fewer people to avoid congestion hence to reduce the spread of corona & if need be they can camp there till they’re done.

Just thinking

Zuena Posted on her Facebook Page

Although some of her followers agreed with her, others were totally disappointed by Zuena’s suggestion calling her all sorts of names. Their major concern was the safety of the renovation team that KCCA would have to bring on board.

Petit responded; That would have been a good idea but I don’t think the constructors are immune to coronavirus which is the reason for the lockdown. We can’t put their lives at risk!! Those taxis can always be asked out temporarily so it can be worked on.

Rose added; Rest at home or rest in peace. How can u tell them to renovate when we are all supposed to stay indoors for our safety?

Immaculate said; Good idea, naye don’t you think the money that would be used to renovate the park can be more useful in the covid-19 fight. As of now, there may be more cases that are expected to come up. Just thinking.

Zuena was quick to defend her self. She said that a few people can be used to do this job because we don’t know how long we’ll be indoors. If it means that the team would have to start camping there for that long, so be it.

We will keep you posted.

All is not well with Zahara Toto and her her boyfriend, Reuben Robert. This after our snoops learned that the couple was involved in a nasty fight last weekend.

According to our snoops, Reuben is said to have hit his head hard on the floor during the fight and is now nursing severe injuries.

He has since been admitted to an undisclosed hospital in town and currently receiving treatment.

Although the cause of the fight remains unknown, it is believed the two could have fought over Zahara’s philandering ways.

The two have been dating for a long time, however, Zahara has never been committed to the relationship.

Not so long ago, Zahara was involved with Sudanese businessman, Don Solo and some say she continues to see him secretly, even after rekindling his relationship with Reuben.

Interview: Meet Hatim and Dokey, the new music duo in town

Hatim and Dokey

By Our Reporter

There is a new duo in town — Hatim and Dokey!

After writing several chart topping songs for other Ugandan artistes, songwriters, Hatim aka Ken Hatim and Dokey aka Dokta Brain have teamed up to also share in the spotlight. They are getting behind the microphone to record music.

The duo was recently signed under Subwami Empire, a local Talent and Events Management Company and are currently working on their debut music album.

We caught up with them for a quick chat:

1. Who is Hatim and Dokey?

Hatim: Real name Ken Hatim, I am a Ugandan singer and songwriter. I started out as a solo artist in in 2015, but that didn’t pan out. Currently I am one half of the duo, Hatim and Dokey, which is signed under Subwami Empire, a Talent and Events Management Company.

Dokey: My real name is Nkwanga Geoffrey but many people know me by my stage name Dokta Brain.

I started my music career at Sous Records in 2014 where I was an in-house songwriter with producer ManPollo.

In 2015, I got my breakthrough after working the legendary Angella Kalule on her single ‘Malaika’. Later that year, I met with the late Danz Kumapeesa and wrote several hit songs including ‘Musawo’ and ‘Magic’ for Winnie Nwagi, as well as ‘Juice Wa Mango’ by Rema.

I have since written several other songs like ‘Kisasi kimu’, ‘Binkolera’, ‘Omwoyo’, and ‘Beera Nange’ by Sheebah Karungi; ‘Sabula’, ‘Nakupenda’, and ‘Katijjo’ by Fille; ‘Olindaki’ by Lydia Jazmine, just to mention but afew.

2. How did you meet and what made you decide to team up?

Hatim: We met for the first time in studio in late 2019. It is after this that we discovered that we could do good music together. The chemistry, how our vocals blend, and the positive feedback from other people made us confident and we talked about becoming a duo and the rest is history.

Dokey: I met Hatim in 2019 at Nuff Empire studio where I had gone to record a song with Skills On the Beat. We had a long chat about the industry and music at large, listened to each other’s music, and thereafter decided to record a song together. We realized there was a good vibe between us, and decided to record even more music together in that same week.

After taking time to look through what we had done together, it was addictive and irresistible to our consciences, we felt we belong together musically. It is after this that we thought of becoming partners.

We formed HD Music, H from Hatim and D from Dokta Brain, but felt the name didn’t sound catchy enough. We later settled for Hatim & Dokey.

3. Describe your kind of music and the creative process that goes into making it?

Hatim: Our music falls in quite a number of genres and is mostly influenced by the surrounding environment at the time. Writing lyrics and creating melodies is a natural skill and ours has evolved over time with training and experience.

Dokey: We are versatile artistes, both lyrically and melodically. We are not confined to one music style. We may do a lot of Afrobeat music but we are very flexible, allowing us to realize our full musical potential.

4. Are you working on any music projects at the moment? If yes, when should we expect them to drop?

Yes, we are working on our debut album titled Vibes and Themes (VAT) which will have 20 tracks. So far we have released 2 songs and hope to be releasing more music soon.

5. What challenges have you so far faced in the music industry and how have you dealt with them?

Hatim: The lack of funds to attend studio sessions, record and produce music, shoot music videos and promote the music is one of the biggest challenges we have had to go through, not to mention unsupportive people along the way.

Dokey: Just like any other business, the music industry is challenging, especially financially. But thank God for our management, we’ve overcome that struggle. Now, the remaining struggle is just a question of time, and all will be alright.

6. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hatim: We pray for life, otherwise we are working to get to the top. We see ourselves holding successful album releases, music concerts, and global tours.

Dokey: We are just going to do what we have to and continue to grow. Through hard work and persistence that we intend to put into our careers for the next five years, we should be able to put our name on the global map.

As Dance With Valentino reality show premieres this month, prepare to get blown away by the epic storytelling done through dance on the show. But first, you’re going to get addicted to the show’s theme song which dropped on Wednesday.

The producers of Dance with Valentino tapped the enchanting vocals of two stunning singers; Ariho Esther aka Essie and Daniel Kawesa for the song which was produced and mastered by Big Nash.

Ariho Esther Yvonne aka Essie

Who is Ariho Esther?

Ariho Esther Yvonne aka Essie is a 27-year-old Ugandan singer who is strongly passionate about music in its truest and rawest form and is currently pursuing a diploma at Africa Institute of music. I started singing as soon as I could talk but my experience of live performance with bands started in 2013. I have in my many years of performing with different bands worked with artistes like Myko Ouma, Lillian Mbabazi, Ykee Benda and Fik Fameika. I am currently part of a band called A Ka Dope.

Describe your experience working on this project

Working on the DWV sound track was such an amazing experience. The energy that was flowing in the studio was awe-inspiring. So many creative minds and I was honoured to be singing with a massively talented singer, Daniel Kawesa and to have a legendary producer Big Nash guide us through the session. I loved the fact that Valentino and the composer of the song were around and easily communicated what their idea of the song was without stopping Daniel and I from adding our identities as musicians to it.

Daniel is a recording artist, who is so passionate about music. Away from music, he is a chef. I started singing in 1998 – 2012 between church and school, but professionally I started in 2013 after winning Coca Cola Rated Next, a talent search.

Describe your experience working on this project

It was an exciting opportunity especially knowing that behind the art there are so many powerful stories. I was privileged to work with very talented people in the industry and building our local content. I pray this show helps us appreciate our Ugandaness.

Dance With Valentino is a new reality dance TV show set to be hosted by renowned Latin and ballroom dancer Valentino Richard Kabenge.
