Ragga Dee denies knowing anything about the Bebe Cool List | VIDEO

Renowned artist Ragga Dee has distanced himself from any knowledge regarding the annual Bebe Cool List.

In his perspective, the list doesn’t carry the significance that the media tends to attribute to it upon release.

With a musical career spanning over two decades, Ragga Dee has transitioned to a role where he advocates for a functional system that ensures artists earn more from their content through Copyright Amendment request and working with young artists rather than engaging in the release of new music.

Despite losing in attempts to become the Lord Mayor of Kampala through the NRM ticket, Ragga Dee continues to resonate with audiences through his timeless classics performed on selected stages.

The artist emphasizes the need for unity within the Ugandan music industry, advocating for mutual support instead of critical judgments.

Expressing concern over the perceived judgmental nature of the Bebe Cool List, he encourages a shift towards fostering empowerment for emerging talents.

I personally don’t know anything about the Bebe Cool list but I have heard people talk about it in the media. It looks like the list is very judgemental instead of empowering the young musicians who are joining the industry. As older musicians, we need to make the music industry better.

Ragga Dee

As a veteran in the industry, Ragga Dee calls for a collaborative effort to enhance the music scene, asserting that the focus should be on supporting one another rather than rating and potentially demoralizing young musicians.

He urges Bebe Cool and others in influential positions to channel their efforts into empowering the new generation, fostering an environment where artists can thrive collectively.

B2C soldiers also known as the ‘Kampala Boys’ are a music trio with Bobby Lash, Mr. Lee and Delivad Julio. The group was formed in 2016 under the management of Andy Events which they later part ways with.

The trio had huge breakthrough in the Ugandan music business with the release of their popular single “Wansesera” which struck the local waves and drew everyone’s attention resulting in a slew of admirers including Radio Mowzey (RIP) of the Goodlyfe Magic crew.

After a year of several hits, the B2C soldiers featured the Goodlyfe crew on a song released in 2017 titled “Gutamiiza” and today we bring you how it all came about.

This love song was mastered and produced by Nessim Pan Production and Radio Mowzey was the brain behind its lyrics. Radio Mowzey was a very creative, versatile and unique song writer and artist.

In an interview with Vybe Life UG, B2C Soldiers, they revealed that on the day of recording this song, Radio was holding a beer from which he got the tittle of the song — Gutamiiza.

Gutamiiza is a Luganda word to mean drunk or getting drunk, relatively, as Radio sipped his beer in bits, he realized that love and attachment are so strong and it seemingly makes people “drunk” and that’s how the song tittle came about.

Until now, The Kampala Boys are still surprised by how Radio Mowzey’s writing, voicing and lyrics were done while they were in studio with the crew.

Nyati crew after interviewing Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayiga
The filming crew share a light moment with Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayiga after shoot.

By Our Reporter

Tuko Pamoja (We Are One) docuseries by Evelyn Cindy Magara (PhD) and Nyati Motion Pictures goes to Cinemas with 13 premieres starting from February to June 2024. Tuko Pamoja documentary film (series) is about Uganda’s heroes and unity in diversity.

Written by Rogers Atukunda and directed by Dr Magara, a Lecturer of Film and Literature at Makerere University, the film explores the unifying geopolitical and geolinguistics of 1870-1900 Uganda and the historical relationships between the peoples of the Great Lakes Region.

According to Dr Magara, the story is relevant to contemporary East Africa as the region struggles to foster unity through a confederation of states such as the East African Community and Africa Union.

“By retracing the historical footsteps of Omukama Kabaleega of Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom, King Mwanga of Buganda Kingdom, Chief Awich of Payira and Queen Muhumuza of Kigezi etc, as some of the major players, especially in the resistance against British imperialism from 1870s to 1900, we learn about the origin of the people of Uganda and the nations (kingdoms) they belonged to that later morph into Uganda.” She noted.

“The colonialists wanted to see us divided on, for example, tribal lines, to subjugate us. When we all know this history, it will reduce on ethnic tensions,” she added.

The segments that shall have independent premieres include Bunyoro-Kitara; Buganda; Busoga; Tooro; Ankole; Kigezi; Breakaway Kingdoms, The Luo; The Ateker; The Peoples of Rwenzori, The Peoples of Eastern Uganda, West Nile and finally Uganda: The Making of a Nation.

“It took you close to 10 years to get a hit song.” – Ugaboys tell Pallaso

Ugaboys and Pallaso have found themselves at the center of a heated online feud following remarks made by Ugaboys regarding Pallaso’s recent collaboration with Konshens, “Want Money.”

During an interview with Galaxy TV, Ugaboys criticized Pallaso’s latest song, igniting a fiery exchange of words between the two camps.

Pallaso swiftly responded to the criticism on his X social media platform, condemning Ugaboys as mere “Amapiano wannabes” who lack the ability to produce a hit song.

In retaliation, Ugaboys fired back, highlighting Pallaso’s journey in the music industry. They pointed out that despite starting his career in 2005, it took him nearly a decade to achieve his first hit song, “Amaaso,” a collaboration with Radio & Weasel in 2014. This jab struck a nerve with Pallaso who the Ugaboys labeled as having quick temper.

The feud escalated as Pallaso labeled Ugaboys as “old upcoming” artists and declared it his duty to revive failed careers.

However, amidst the online clash, Ugaboys have cemented their own success, notably with their breakout hit “Salary,” which excited audiences and dominated charts in the past year.

Kenneth Mugabi

By Our Reporter

In the latest episode of Tusker Malt Conversessions, which aired Sunday on YouTube, music enthusiasts are treated to an intimate exploration of the Afro-soul maestro, Kenneth Mugabi.

As he takes centre stage, Mugabi effortlessly serenades the audience with an enticing range of his most cherished tracks. With a medley of his signature tunes; his guitar and his fiddle, he began his setlist with the lovely “Sanyu,” following it up with the emotionally charged “Ebinyuma,” and then “Nkwegomba.”

The artiste weaves through his discography with interludes of his own interesting ‘Conversessions”, culminating with his chart-topping hit, “Naki.”

However, it is the ‘Conversessions’ that makes the highlight of his beautiful serenade. Mugabi takes the opportunity to share the profound stories behind his compositions, emphasising the power of his own personal experiences that led to such musical masterpieces.

The revelation of the inspiration behind “Naki” is particularly captivating. Mugabi talked about how the song came from the context of some of his most embarrassing situations and childhood frustrations, narrating how he channelled feelings of being “unwanted” and “rejected” into the creation of the song.

Beyond the melodies, Mugabi candidly addresses the comparisons drawn between his sound and that of Maurice Kirya. Mugabi acknowledges that at the beginning of his musical journey, he indeed used to perform Kirya’s songs. The turning point came during the Rated Next show, where Kirya who was serving as a judge, encouraged Mugabi to pursue his career. This pivotal advice led to the release of Mugabi’s album, “Kibun’omu,” in 2016, featuring the beloved track “Naki.”

He goes ahead to share the fact that he fully immerses himself into understanding the characters of who he is writing about, declaring that he is a method writer, much like method actors.

“I am not a woman, but I had to first understand how a woman behaves, what is a woman about. I love ladies so much, whenever I write a song I think about them first,” he says.

“I want to be remembered as the person who sold Uganda to Ugandans. In my mind when I’m performing anywhere, the first thing I want is for Ugandans to feel proud to be Ugandans, because I am a Musige from Busoga,” he adds.

Mugabi also opens up about his personal life, revealing that he is in a serious long-term relationship with a particular lady he doesn’t name, attributing the successful navigation of the relationship’s challenges to his faith and God’s protection.

The Kenneth Mugabi episode is the fourth in the show’s second season.

Mdundo Uganda Mixer: Uniting Artists for Music Business Growth

On February 15th, the vibrant beats of Uganda’s music scene resonated through the halls of Kush Lounge in Kololo as the Mdundo Uganda Mixer unfolded. Hosted by Uganda’s Mdundo A&R Serah Adong in collaboration with Swangz Avenue, Kelele Digital, and Omziki Distribution, the event emerged as a pivotal platform for artists and industry stakeholders to converge, deliberate, and strategize on the ever-growing music business economy.

The gathering wasn’t just another party; it was a purposeful get-together aimed at dissecting the opportunities, challenges, and solutions across Uganda’s music industry. At the heart of the discourse was Mdundo, a Pan African Digital Service Provider (DSP) that has been progressively expanding its footprint across the continent. With its sights set on Uganda, Mdundo is not merely extending its reach; it’s revolutionizing accessibility for Ugandan artists to amplify their presence on the digital stage.

Serah Adong, the organizer of the event, emphasized the significance of creating synergies between Mdundo and the local music scene. She articulated how this collaboration isn’t just about disseminating music; it’s about empowering artists with the tools, resources, and knowledge necessary to navigate the intricacies of the music business successfully.

Swangz Avenue, a powerhouse in Uganda’s music industry, lent its expertise to the mixer, underscoring the importance of strategic partnerships in driving growth and innovation. Kelele Digital and Omziki Distribution added further depth to the dialogue by shedding light on the evolving digital distribution landscape and the opportunities it presents for artists to monetize their craft effectively.

As the discussions unfolded, several key themes emerged, highlighting the evolving dynamics of Uganda’s music industry:

1. Digital Distribution: With the advent of streaming platforms and digital distribution channels, artists are no longer confined to traditional avenues for sharing their music. Mdundo’s presence in Uganda signifies a shift towards democratizing access to these platforms, allowing artists to reach a broader audience while retaining greater control over their content.

2. Monetization Strategies: Monetizing music in the digital age requires a multifaceted approach. From streaming royalties to merchandise sales and live performances, artists need to diversify their revenue streams to thrive in an increasingly competitive landscape. The mixer served as a forum for exploring innovative monetization strategies tailored to the unique needs of Ugandan artists.

3. Collaborative Opportunities: Collaboration lies at the heart of artistic growth and innovation. The mixer provided a conducive environment for artists to forge new connections, explore potential collaborations, and leverage each other’s strengths to create compelling music that resonates with audiences both locally and globally.

4. Education and Capacity Building: Navigating the intricacies of the music business demands a comprehensive understanding of copyright laws, publishing rights, and marketing strategies. The mixer underscored the importance of ongoing education and capacity-building initiatives to empower artists with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in an ever-evolving industry landscape.

As the Mdundo Uganda Mixer drew to a close, it left behind a palpable sense of optimism and excitement for the future of Uganda’s music industry. With Mdundo at the helm, backed by strategic partnerships and a shared commitment to fostering growth and innovation, the stage is set for Ugandan artists to chart new horizons and make their mark on the global music scene.

The entertainment industry is buzzing once again as DJ Nimrod steps into the ongoing feud involving A Pass, Mariachi, and Rango Tenge Tenge.

It all started when A Pass publicly called out comedian Mariachi for his remarks about Rango Tenge Tenge during a comedy show on Valentine’s Day.

While Mariachi faced backlash, some industry insiders defended him, citing the comedic nature of his performance.

However, the situation took an unexpected turn when DJ Nimrod decided to weigh in on the matter. Taking to social media, Nimrod didn’t hold back in his critique of A Pass’s recent album, labelling it a “non-starter” devoid of hit songs.

In a pointed post, Nimrod remarked, “But why would an artist attack a fellow person in the art industry for misusing words on stage and yet you also have just released a failed 42 track Album. Imagine 42 good songs but none is a HIT. Obukila Balala nga nawe oli bubi (laughing emojis).”

A Pass swiftly responded with a metaphor of his own, stating, “Never give a wedding cake 🎂 to a p!g because it will view & eat it like a Rotten sweet potato.”

The exchange between Nimrod and A Pass has ignited discussions within entertainment circles, with fans and industry insiders expressing a range of opinions on the unfolding controversies.
