Sabotage, a new film exploring sexual violence and abortion in a Ugandan context, has premiered. The premiere, attended by players in Uganda’s arts industry, representatives from development organisations, celebrities and film enthusiasts, took place on Thursday at the Century Cinemax Acacia Mall.

Directed by Mathew Nabwiso and starring Stella Natumbwe, Sharifa Ali, Jjemba Dean Austin, Denid Kinan and others in a rollercoaster drama, the movie is set around a traditional wedding (‘kwanjula’), and aims to raise awareness around Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) in Uganda.

While addressing guests during the premiere, Humphrey Nabimanya, the film’s Executive Producer, said, “Sexual violence is distressingly prevalent and disproportionately impacts girls and women – subjecting them to enduring trauma and often leading to unsafe abortions. Sabotage sheds light on this urgent matter and emphasises the pressing need for immediate action to protect our young girls and women.”

Abortion is illegal in Uganda with Article 22 of the 1995 Constitution providing for the right to life and Article 22(2) specifically providing for not terminating an unborn child except if it is to save the life of the mother. As a result, unsafe abortion practices become the feasible alternative – especially for victims of sexual violence – and contribute to maternal deaths in Uganda.

Sabotage movie premiere

Reach A Hand Uganda’s Country Director – James Tumusiime – said, “Through Sabotage, we are leveraging the power of visual activism to highlight and address stigma, gender-based violence, teenage pregnancy, maternal mortality as a result of unsafe abortion and harmful cultural narratives in the Ugandan context.”

The film’s premiere offered selected attendees an opportunity to witness the culmination of months of hard work and dedication by the cast and crew.

Mathew Nabwiso, the film’s director, said, “We are honoured by the effort put into making this movie and by the desire to bring about significant societal change, and we look forward to even more members of the public getting an opportunity to experience it and join the frank conversation around Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights in Uganda.”

Following the screening, guests were treated to an elegant reception complete with cocktails and opportunities to mingle with the cast and crew and share their thoughts about the film.

Sabotage will be available for a public screening on 23rd , 24th and 25th February 2024 at the Century Cinemax branches at Acacia Mall, Arena Mall and Metroplex Naalya.

Sabotage is a project by Reach A Hand Uganda (RAHU) in partnership with Sauti+ Media Hub and Nabwiso Films.

In a recent TV interview, the Minister of State for Gender, Hon. Peace Mutuuzo, disclosed that the long-awaited copyright law, sought after by content creators, is on the brink of release.

The minister expressed confidence that the bill, which could have already been enacted, is poised to become law within the next two months, pending the President’s signature.

Attributing the delay to administrative procedures, Mutuuzo explained that the bill had been forwarded to the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs due to the absence of Gender ministry officials during its initial discussions. However, she reassured stakeholders that the process is now progressing swiftly towards fruition.

The copyright law will be released very soon. I’m so confident about that. In fact, it might not take even more than two months before the President signs it into law.

Hon. Mutuuzo

Furthermore, she disclosed the imminent disbursement of funds promised to musicians by the government. A sum of Shs 10 billion is slated for allocation to a SACCO, where musicians can apply for loans.

Despite initial requests totaling 18 billion shillings, the government has committed to providing additional funding, potentially reaching up to Shs 30 billion, as affirmed by the Minister.

Mutuuzo emphasized the government’s support for the music industry, portraying it as a testament to its dedication to fostering economic opportunities for artists. Addressing musicians directly, she underscored the government’s unique commitment to their welfare, emphasizing its desire to see them thrive and derive fair compensation for their creative endeavors.

Moreover, the Minister outlined the procedure for accessing funds from the SACCO, highlighting that approval would be overseen by the Federation’s president, Eddy Kenzo, ensuring transparency and accountability in the disbursement process.

Written and produced by Polly Kamukama, the Rukiga dialect film will battle it out with four other films from Sudan and Tanzania in the Best International Film category at the 13th edition of the prestigious awards to be held in Nairobi on March 30.

Organised by the Kenya Film Commission (KFC), the country’s oversight agency for film development, Kalasha awards seek to recognize outstanding talents within the film and TV industries in Kenya and across the region.

By Our Reporter

The Irish community in Kampala came together for the culmination of the annual St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, with a charity gala event held at the Kampala Sheraton Hotel gardens on Saturday.

The event, organised by the Irish Society, drew over 300 guests, predominantly comprised of members of the Irish community, to commemorate the rich cultural heritage of Ireland.

The festivities kicked off with a lavish dinner at the Irish Ambassador’s residence, setting the tone for the days ahead. Then came the party at Naguru, where the Irish stout Guinness flowed freely, and the dance floor never seemed to empty. But it was the Charity Gala at the Kampala Sheraton Hotel gardens that truly stole the show.

The event was officiated by the Ambassador, H.E Kelvin Colgan, who extended his gratitude to the Irish community for their continued relationship with Uganda.

This year marked the 70th annual charity event, with guests from the diplomatic community coming together to raise money for good deeds. The proceeds collected are aimed at supporting different charity organisations in Kampala. Last year, the event raised Shs50m, benefitting five organisations including Hospice Africa and Hands of Hope.

But they aren’t stopping there. This year, they have their sights set even higher, aiming to collect Shs100m for the charities. With the support of generous sponsors and the infectious energy of the attendees, it seems like an achievable goal.

Of course, no celebration would be complete without music and dance. The band “9 Hazel Trees” from Ireland serenaded the crowd, while Roisin Lyons treated everyone to a mesmerizing Irish dance performance. Before long, guests found themselves swept up in the spirit of the evening, dancing and laughing the night away.

Bell Lager recycles, reuses 100% waste material from Roast and Rhyme 20th edition

100% of the waste material collected from the first edition of Bell Roast and Rhyme this year, at Jahazi Pier Munyonyo, was recycled, reused and repurposed.

By Our Reporter

100% of the waste material collected from the first edition of Roast and Rhyme this year, at Jahazi Pier Munyonyo, was recycled, reused and repurposed as part of the Bell Lager’s commitment towards reducing its environmental impact from any consumer engagements.

The Roast and Rhyme specific initiative employed a waste management team that ensured proper waste disposal during and after the event with 37% (170.7kg) of collected waste recycled, and 63% (about 282.2kg) of the waste reused. Waste collected ranged from plastics, silver plates, aluminium cans, chip boards and food waste.

The brand pioneered the drive towards sustainable growth last year at the inaugural Obafest at the same venue with over 83% of the collected waste recycled from the festival.

According to the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Uganda generates 600 tonnes of plastics daily. In Kampala alone, 150 tonnes of waste are generated everyday and it is estimated that in urban areas, waste generation per capita stands at around one kilogram per day, and only 40 percent of plastic waste produced in urban areas is collected, so 60 per cent is left on its own lending to a number of problems.
